***Dan Provost’s “A Way Of Life” is #185 in the never-ending series called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem.  All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece.
Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? This poem came out fairly quick. I remember looking around my apartment—everything in such disarray-mumbling to myself “Depression sucks…” these are the first lines of the poem.  Everything seemed to flow from there.
Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?  And please describe the place in great detail. I was living in a one-bedroom apartment in Worcester, Massachusetts.  I was working as an administrator at a local college.  The bulk of the poem was written right in that filthy abode.  Pizza boxes all over the place, half empty beer bottles on my coffee table, clothes all over the floor.  I was living within crap, doing nothing to improve the situation (like getting off my ass and clean my mess).  I did, however possess a lot of notebooks—out of desperation, I began to write the poem.
What month and year did you start writing this poem? I believe it was in March, 2007.
How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? I hit this in one shot.  Usually, for me anyways—those are the writings that seem to get published at a greater rate.  I’m sorry, but that notebook is long gone.
Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version?  And can you share them with us? As I mentioned, this writing was a straightforward, one shot deal.  The ideas really flowed at a rapid pace.
What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem? Depression is an evil, dark disease that can eat at you mind, soul and psyche.  I do not wish it on my worst enemy.
Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why? Being bullied and having sunflower seeds spit in my hair as a seventh grader was tough to put to paper.  Some of your worst losses are remembered on the playground, or the school bus…Humiliation at any age sucks.  In the seventh grade, it’s horror.

Has this poem been published before?  And if so where? The poem originally was part of a chapbook called Born to Look on the Ground, published by Michael Grover over at Covert Press. It is now part of my new book, Under the Influence of Nothingness, recently released by Kung Fu Treachery Press.
A Way of Life

Depression sucks…it’s a murderer of many, the pain of existence.  A lasting relationship with the knowledge that death is around the corner

That unwanted thing you never want to talk about.
The cheap lady in the goth clothes.

Your nightmare at noon
Your insomnia at 4 AM

This is what depression is
Alcoholism, flimsy drug addicts.
Spouse abuse, jobless—homeless

A shot in the heart from 10 deadly demons.
Depression?  Yes, I have it.

For too many years, too many days locked up in black and blank.
Slurping through life on a bug infested couch watching Law and Order reruns.

Crying to the shadows of dust—arranging clothes on the floor
Spare change on the table.

Magazines from last year on the desk.
CD’s out of jackets.

Lost, forlorn, disgusted, angry.
Looking for one more drink to get past the plunge.

Avoiding mirrors.
Showering in dirty water
Smell, grime…a filthy sink.
Analysis of spoon-fed steps to the mailbox.
Yes, this is fucking depression.  A shrill in
the daytime that no one hears

But you.
And only you.

For it’s our little secret.  All those who walk like prisoners without the key.
Bombarded with soot from a hole in your stomach.

Silent yet loud…pounding your head until your ears bleed into the
river of ponder.

Too tired to hear or see.

Alone time with yourself is never scripted,
only feared when the phone is the enemy and
the food on the table has gone bad.

Friends with fruit flies that comfort the pain.
Normalcy inside a spit cup.  Phlegm is just
an inconvenience you cough up when there is no
answer out the window.

Plagues of ships sail in no harbor--
but inside your mind…pirates cutting your
throat with memories of being beat up by
the grade school bully.

Spitting sunflower seeds in your hair.
And you, supposedly tough guy—do
nothing but cry in the corner.

Where they know…
They know…

Cruise on whiskey highs
Marijuana highs
Light the beam for a while

Until the come down
Leading to a vile of pussy tears and
Dancing in a false pavilion.

Sickness can take the mind
Where the mind usually does not
Want to go.

But we travel there.
Oh yes, we travel there.

Until the sea and the sand and the wind and the trees and
the heartache of missing her touch.

Becomes passé and almost a basic
ritual to feed the crow again.

Man walks by and you don’t care.
Fuck why do you care?

Are you a savior in this dream?
Slammed on the cross or crashed in
A building…

My spirit never could fly.

Not while my trash can is full—the men
die daily, they always do.

My actions?
Mean nothing in the sphere of things

Things that matter, then don’t
But that’s another argument; is this life
a choice of the living or the roll of the dice
by some goop of a being that enjoys
seeing us suffer.

A masochist wizard
                    or god?

I don’t know.
I never know.

So, I wake up again
contemplate the knife or the pills
or the building in downtown Worcester
that’s high enough to jump off

And kill me.

Then choose neither--instead
I shower and put on a suit
of existence

Refuse to listen to music.
Drive toward fake.

Drown in my own tears
Then repeat the process the next day.

Yes, this is depression my friend or enemy.
A meddle of the mind, a shotgun
to the soul…where my contemporaries
can turn away in agony.  Thanking

Their lucky stars

It’s not them.
