***Kelly Van Nelson’s “CUBE” is #253 in the never-ending series called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem.  All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece. 

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? “Cube” started out as a simple idea of making a poem about a Rubik’s Cube. I love writing poetry around a metaphor and the concept of a cube and all of its sides and potential moves stuck in my thoughts as a great basis to write a piece on. I kept expanding on the idea from there, intentionally adding a verse to represent each of the six sides of a cube.

 

Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?  And please describe the place in great detail. Many of my poems tend to form as I am out walking – I think the outdoors and fresh air is good for my creative brain. I’m lucky to live in a beautiful part of Sydney where it is tropical and there are beaches and water inlets everywhere, so walking my dog daily and enjoying nature is a staple. I put my headphones in and walk for long periods of time, chewing on an idea of a poem until it begins to take shape in my head. I use the voice app on my phone as I am walking to capture concepts, mainly with a few lines coming to mind during the walk. When I get home I transfer the ideas from the audio on my voice app to my laptop and morph the poem from there. Cube started out this way. What month and year did you start writing this poem? It was first written in November 2019.

 

How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?) I wrote maybe four or five versions or so but I only ever keep two versions of a poem. The one that goes into print publication and sometimes a second version for spoken word and slams. The written version of Cube has a slightly unusual lay out to help emphasize the different sides of a Cube. I played with the layout a lot!

 

Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version?  And can you share them with us? Nope, it was a ‘clean’ poem. What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem? From a messaging perspective, that we are all multi-dimensional in our own different sides, that relationships are often not right and to trust your judgement when something doesn’t feel right. I also love performing Cube at live spoken word events and bring the forth wall into the performance. It works well with a live audience or on zoom open mics. Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why? Probably the verse about having a sixth sense and trusting the gut. I really wanted to emphasise the angst and anger that can come with break ups. 

 

Has this poem been published before?  And if so where? Yes, “Cube” is featured in my second poetry book, which is titled Punch and Judy, published by MMH Press. The book is a #1 bestseller, about turbulent relationships and domestic violence. It has also been made into an audio poem with visual kinetic typography, which is available for viewing on YouTube. Cube also played in its visual form in Melbourne Fringe Festival and in the Melbourne Spoken Word Festival in Australia. I love fusing visual poetry, written poetry, and the spoken word to reach broader audiences and to play with different creative forms.

CUBE

Multiple dimensions formulate the shape of a cube

just as multiple dimensions formulate me.

This is my one-sided story.

When I was a struggling high school kid,

mean girls used to call me square,

assuming it a flat two-dimensional insult,

but I knew it was the basis on which I 

could build a pyramid, or a cube,

or whatever wonder took my mood.

On the surface, I flash smile at passers-by,

showing only the angle I want them to see.

People who know me well see my other sides, 

loving every corner of who I am.

Others kiss my cheek 

with their tongue in their own cheek.

spreading gossip, ignorant to the fact they are two-faced.

  

Multiple dimensions formulate the shape of a cube

just as multiple dimensions formulate me, 

so here I am saying I have more than one face

making me two-faced too,

I’m not too ashamed, cheeks inflamed, to say it.

Every person needs more than two sides

to have any fun when rolling life’s dice

and while socially three is company

far better to have a fourth wall.

“Hey you … I’m not alone in thinking this … am I?”

How many dimensions formulate you?

Only I can be held responsible 

for the shape my life takes,

moving 54 pieces in combinations

through 43.2 quintillion variations 

of a Rubik’s Cube,

making moves in the right order

to create harmony amidst chaotic disorder.

 

For a while you helped me build a fifth side,

adding bricks of confidence cemented with 

superficial friends paying social dividends;

an architecturally flawed structure trespassing on the

solid square base of my solitary childhood.

You framed the future as sturdy enough 

to keep a roof over my head,

allowing me to call your house our home 

until I realised I had a sixth sense,

a waterproof silver-lining within the roof, 

keeping me dry from the storms of lies,

muting the sound of incomprehensible cries, 

brimming with enough instinct to know 

the only love I ever saw,

smelt, taste, heard and could touch

meant nothing if sixth sense curdled my gut

from the certainty of knowing 

you’d put a roof above another’s head,

flexed your muscles inside their bed,

and I hadn’t mis-read the diabolically dire situation.

You were convinced my cube would cave in 

when I made the move to demolish 

every brick you ever laid atop my foundations, 

collapsing our roof to ground zero, but I’m still here,

with 43.199 quintillion new moves to make.

Now I’ve removed the toxic side of my life that was you,

I’ve discovered it’s easier to think outside a box with no ceiling.
