***Maria Taylor’s “My Stranger” is #258 in the never-ending series called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem. All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece.
Where were you when you started to actually write the poem? And please describe the place in great detail. I had an idea, but I was without a notebook. I went into a large shop called Staples on my way to the train station. I chose a fat, A5 salmon pink Oxford notebook and thought I should write my ideas down before I forgot them. My very first place of drafting was in my head, but ideas are so easily forgotten! My physical initial draft was aboard a moving train that I had boarded at Leicester and was headed toward Loughborough, the town where we still live. The houses and countryside were speeding by outside the window. (Left: Maria Taylor's pink journal. Photo Credit and copyright by Maria Taylor)
I wrote my first draft as a stream of consciousness piece, as a way of recording any details I could include about my fictional dad’s life. In doing so I was creating a figure who was the opposite of my own father, but I was primarily creating a character of sorts. I can’t remember specific details as I was too engrossed in the writing, but I imagine that there were people walking up and down the aisle, train announcements and the pungent smell of East Midlands Trains coffee from the buffet. (Right: Maria Taylor's rough draft on her poem "The Stranger" Credit and Copyright by Maria Taylor)
What month and year did you start writing this poem? The first scribbled draft for this poem was in early September 2015. (Left: Maria Taylor's Baba in the 1960s. Copyright by Maria Taylor)
How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?) A few drafts, drafts within drafts. Maybe not as much as other poems and this to me is a good sign as the poem was slightly more fully formed. I had no idea what I was writing and whether or not it would be any good; I just wanted to write it. If I look back at my handwritten and electronic drafts there are about 8 or so. It always had the same shape, which was a block of a poem in one verse. Maybe that’s keeping to the stream of consciousness style from the first draft. Perhaps I was veering towards prose as there is a character in the poem and some sense of narrative. (Right: Maria Taylor's rough draft of "My Stranger" Credit and Copyright by Maria Taylor)
Here’s a line from the very first draft:
‘His favourite meal was steak and chips at the St. George near the canal.’
It had to go of course, it’s too journalistic. The purpose was just imagining the character, I guess. A typical ‘dad’s’ dinner. I was imagining the St. George as one of those very well-to-do gastropubs we have in England, in a pretty location near to a canal or a river. The papa of my poem is a very middle-class English dad. Again, nothing like mine. My dad is working class immigrant Cypriot. Although my own father would be very happy with a plate of steak and chips. Many people would. Has this poem been published before? And if so where? It was published in The Manchester Review, which is an online publication, in January 2016. This is shockingly quite a while ago now, half a decade!
http://www.themanchesterreview.co.uk/
It then went into my latest book, Dressing for the Afterlife, published by Nine Arches Press in September 2020. It was not a poem I had ever read out in public; I didn’t also think it was suited to performance, which may have been wrong.
The poem slept in a manuscript for a long while, but it’s had a brand-new life as The Guardian poem of the week. It was published by The Guardian website in December 2020. It has been really interesting to see how Carol Rumens (Below Left) has interpreted the poem.

My Stranger
hangs where the plaster cracked
and the ribs of the house show.
He’s the only stranger I can afford,
a middle-aged man in a plaid shirt
smiling for an artist. Nothing to me,
but still I hang him in the hallway
and call him Dad. Of course, visitors
have doubts. I know they know
his hair’s too light, the eyes too blue.
I win them over by recalling
our fishing holidays, how dad slit
the belly of a rainbow trout and out
slipped a diamond ring for me.
A perfect fit. Dad was handy.
He met my mother when she broke
down outside the Camden Palace,
and changed her tyre without a jack.
He made us a sherbet play house,
we licked its walls to nothingness.
He taught my brother harpsichord.
Now he’s international. You may
have heard him on the radio.
That’s a self-portrait. He never lived
to paint us all. ‘What a terrible loss,’
visitors sigh. I lead them into
a living room and whisper, ‘Yes.’
Maria Taylor is a British Cypriot poet whose latest collection Dressing for the Afterlife is out now with Nine Arches Press. She has been Highly Commended in this year's Forward Prizes. Her work has appeared in magazines and publications such as The Guardian, Magma, and The Rialto. John McCullough has described her poetry as 'exhilaratingly bold', and working at 'the edges of form and emotional experience to uncover glittering seams.'
