***Jennifer Barber’s “About My Death” is #216 in the never-ending series called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem.  All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece.

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form?
My father died of lymphoma in 2014. He had several months of knowing there was nothing more the doctors could do for him, but he wasn’t resigned to dying. This was difficult to watch, and got me thinking that when I die, I don’t want to have too much warning, too much time to dwell on it—hence the opening line of “About My Death.”

For a while, a matter of weeks, I only had that opening line and the image of late summer roses, without any idea of where the poem might go after that. Then I began visualizing previous trips to Spain and the starkness of its landscape, which for me has always evoked thoughts of life and death. The black cut-out bull in lines 4 and 5 of the poem is a reference to the highway billboards of the Osborne Sherry Company, used to advertise their “Brandy de Jerez.”

If I didn’t want to know about my own dying too much ahead of time, what did I want? Asking this question resulted in trying to imagine my own last moments, and the poem’s middle lines developed from that attempt. They are also informed by a somewhat mysterious painting that hangs in my living room, painted by my father-in-law: it depicts two seated women in unfashionably long dresses in what looks like a living room, facing neither toward or away from each other. These two women became in my mind the “Never and Forever twins.”
The poem’s last lines refer to those moments right after someone dies when typically the corpse’s jewelry—in this case, a wedding ring—is removed.

Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?
And please describe the place in great detail. I began writing the poem at home, in my attic, where I have a workspace—a large desk surface—overlooking the attic stairs. There are bookshelves all around me, and the space feels cozy and secure, if usually somewhat cluttered with various drafts of poems, candles, pens and pencils, etc.

What month and year did you start writing this poem?
I’m not sure but I think it was the summer of 2018, perhaps July or August—I know it was hot outside, and that the end of summer was looming.                                                                                                 How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?) I’m sure I had at least 40 drafts of the poem, although the changes I kept making were small ones, once I had the beginning, middle, and end of the poem in sight. I showed the poem to my husband, Peter Brown, and he helped with suggestions in stanzas 5 and 6. Typically I work on a poem through numerous drafts before sharing it with my husband and my writer friends.

Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version?  And can you share them with us?
For sure there were lines in the rough drafts that didn’t make it into the final version, but I don’t have a way to access the earlier drafts at this point. I tend to keep drafts around for a while after completing a “final” version, but once a few years have gone by, chances are I have recycled the drafts.

What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem?
My hope is that readers will find a way through the poem to think about their own last moments in a speculative and calm way. My belief is that most of us dread death and that therefore we avoid thinking about it, but sometimes going ahead and entering that mental space can be beneficial.
Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why? The beginning of the poem was emotional for me for the reason I mentioned earlier—I was thinking about my father’s death. The ending was also emotional for me to write, because it got me thinking about death as a separation between my husband and me.

Has this poem been published before?
And if so where? The poem was published in Poetry Magazine in May 2020. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/issue/153185/may-2020
About My Death

I don’t want to see it coming
like late summer roses waiting to bloom

or a highway I remember in Spain,
a giant black cut-out bull

as a hilltop billboard.
Instead let me be half asleep,

the Never and Forever twins,
one in a brown dress, one in blue,

steeped in the shadow of my room,
the air replacing my breath

with flow and husk, and then the sound.
Let me leave each twin a gift:

a milky quartz on the night table,
my worn gold wedding ring.
