****LaVerne Thompson’s Soul Collectors is the twentieth in a never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris
Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction
genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt. All INSIDE
THE EMOTION OF FICTION links are at the

Name of fiction work?
And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us?
Soul Collectors. No this was my first choice.
Fiction genre? Ex
science fiction, short story, fantasy novella, romance, drama, crime, plays,
flash fiction, historical, comedy, etc. And how many pages long? Urban fantasy, 73 pages (Click on link below to read what URBAN FANTASY is by Joanna Penn.
Has this been published? And it is
totally fine if the answer is no. If yes, what publisher and what publication
date? Part of the Wings of the Wicked Boxed set. Published Jan. 8th,
2019
What is the date you began writing this
piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of
fiction? I actually started writing it years ago as part of an interactive role
playing site. But then put it down. Picked it up back in June and finished it
in August.
Where did you do most of your writing for
this fiction work? And please describe in detail. And can you please include a
photo? Most of it was written in my office. These are usually my views as I
write.
What were your writing
habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to
music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I write at various times during the day, all on the
laptop. This one I wrote while the television played on a low volume in the
background.
What is the summary of
this specific fiction work? Betwixt
heaven and hell, a world exists called earth. Otherwise known as the
battlefield for souls. Angelique is an Angel Soul Collector. She collects the souls of those who died in fear,
anger and pain. She is there to bear witness to the suffering, give comfort and
hope and determine if they are worthy of heaven. Some choose not to go with her and instead thirst
for revenge; those refuse to give up their earthly ties and she leaves them to
their fates. Some find satisfaction and will be given another chance to cross
over, but most doom themselves to wander the earthly realm for an eternity. The
ones who surrender to her, to the light, she opens the doorway and escorts them
to a better life.
Then there are the others.
Nathanial is a Demon Soul Collector.
He collects souls for his master of those who died
in fear, anger and pain. Those who thirst for revenge, he encourages to remain
on earth and cause havoc. Others that have their names already written in his Rubrum
Libro, little red book, he
opens the gateway and shoves them straight into hell. For him, it’s a job. He
was born of a human mother and demon father then raised in hell to become a
collector.
They are enemies. But once they were something
else. Still, one of them must die.
This is not a romance. There can be no happy ending with a
demon. On an end.
Can you give the reader just enough information for them to
understand what is going on in the excerpt? This is the pivotal scene that helped to shape the young
soul collector that strengthens his hate of the competition, the angels or
white wings, when he becomes an adult. They’ve taken his best friend a human
from him, worse she wants to go with them. She who was making a difference in
the life of a tormented demon child,
Please include the excerpt and include page numbers as

Nathanial growled at the white wing, prepared to put
Angelique down so he could fight. “She goes with me. He glanced down at her, it
would not be much longer he would see the light of her soul rising to the
surface. But she had to choose. In that the damn white wing was right, otherwise
she’d not be able to enter. “You choose to come with me don’t you, Angelique?”
“Hot…Na…too hot. Mama, where’s Mama? I want Mama.” Her chest
rose and she seemed to gag but never released her next breath.
Suddenly, the body he held began to glow. He could feel the
warmth of his best friend’s inner light leave her body, leaving it and him
cold. Angelique’s soul, like her mother’s burned just as bright, maybe even
brighter as it left the child’s body. Nathanial reached for it, tried to
capture it, to take her hand. To take her with him so he could have his friend
with him forever. His hand passed through hers but she also moved out of his
reach.
He could see the shadow of his friend within the light. As
her mother had done, she smiled sadly at him too. “Come with me,” he cried,
still holding out his hand to her.
She didn’t speak, but she slowly shook her head to let him
know she could not or would not go with him. There was another beat of wings
and another one. Two of those beings landed beside Angelique. Come to claim
her, to take her away from him forever. He hated them all. They were the enemy
of all demonkin. But they were now his enemy for other reasons. They took her from him. But he hated
Angelique too even as his tears covered her face in bloody streaks and he
cradled the empty shell she’d left behind. She went with them. Choosing them
over him.
And became his enemy.
Why is this excerpt so emotional for you? And can you
describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? The story isn’t one of good v. evil as much as
about choices and how even the bad ones can be redeemed. Your upbringing ever
the circumstances of birth don’t necessarily define who you are or what you can
become. I’ve always believed that and tried to show it in this story. Here’s a demon trying to, in his way, save a
human.
Other works you have
published? I write under 2 names,
LaVerne Thompson and Ursula Sinclair and under both I’ve published about 40
books.
Anything you would like to add?
I’m currently also in
another boxed set Crossroads a multi-genre anthology where I’ve got two works, an
urban fantasy Wild Child and a new adult romantic intrigue under Ursula
Sinclair.
LaVerne Thompson is a USA Today Bestselling, award winning,
multi-published author, an avid reader and a writer of contemporary, fantasy,
and sci/fi sensual romances. She loves creating worlds within and without our
world. She also writes romantic suspense and new adult romance under the pen
name Ursula Sinclair.
She is a certified chocoholic and is currently working on several
projects. Some might even involve chocolate. But writing helps maintain her
sanity.
