Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? I was on my daily morning walk.  I have been using these walks to work through the grief of losing my father two months ago.  He was my best friend.  We had lived together for the past six years.  He was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease that long ago and started receiving dialysis treatment three times a week.  The disease worked him down over the years.  (Right: Bart in November 2020.  Copyright granted by Bartholomew Rothrauff)

We were very close.  After years of close calls and many many hospital visits, in the spring of this year, he was told he may lose both his legs.  He did not want to endure any more pain so he decided to stop dialysis treatment and enter his final hospice care.  

The month of September was the worst of my entire life.  Watching him die changed me in a major way.  I felt as if something inside me had been broken, with family coming down and visiting and my dad getting his last rights, the whole thing hit me like a never-ending car crash.  After he died everyone left and I was left alone in the apartment we shared.  It only lasted a few more weeks there before the grief and depression drove me to leave.  (Right: Bart's father. I quit my job, packed my stuff in a haul, terminated my lease early, and moved from Florida to Arkansas to be closer to my sister.  She was the only family member I felt safe with.  I am trying to pick up the pieces of my life, and I’m still unsure if I can do it.  This poem comes from that feeling.  I write my poems in their entirety, usually on my iPhone in the notes app, then reread them again and again, making small word changes here and there until I feel that it is complete.  Then I post it on my website. Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?  And please describe the place in great detail. I was on my daily walk at 6 a.m.  It was still dark out, and I could see the stars and the sliver moon high in the night sky.  The grass was frosted and frozen white.  It was windy and I could see my breath billow out of my mouth as I made my way out of the apartment parking lot.  When I got to the main road, only the headlights from the passing cars illuminated my path.  I pulled out my phone, opened my notes, and started writing about how I was feeling. It took about 45 minutes to get the main poem out, then maybe 30 minutes to refine it to my liking.

How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?) Really only one, maybe two.  I got the main bits done, then changed a couple of words in the third and final sections to better focus on what I was trying to say, and to tie the first lines together with the last. 

Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version?  And can you share them with us? The only changes were a single word here and there.  For instance, in the second section, I had “Sometimes I wanna die too.”  I pulled off the "too", trying to pare the line down.  In the same section, the last line was originally a copy of the last line in section four, “I can’t, I’m on a mission.”  I changed this to “But he sent me on a mission” because I wanted my dad to be linked to the reason, the guiding force of my new mission.  In section five I changed the worst “Self-imposed surgery” to “self-inflicted surgery,” feeling like inflicted better conveyed the violence and pressured feeling caused by the circumstances I have felt that led me to start working myself, trying to cut out the dark parts that I feel the need to change about myself. 

In the sixth section, the third line was originally something else.  Since I don’t write things on paper I can’t recall what the original line was, but the final line “I know there’s no way home now,” seemed to fit the overall situation I’ve found myself in.  I’ve lost my sense of home, my sense of security, and am now out in the wilderness left to make a new home if I can.  Lastly, the third line in the final section originally ended with the word Satan, but then was changed to GG Alin to connect the idea of nihilism and reckless abandonment with the first section.

What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem? I am always trying to give words and express feelings that others can relate to.  I have met countless people going through grief and depression, people who feel lost and alone and desperate for the feeling of anything other than severe pain they are in.  I want to give a voice to those who can’t put into words the dark emotions they are feeling.  I want to map out my transition and all the anger and self-hate I have been going through.  

It starts with me listening to GG because he is very nihilistic and violent and angry.  I feel like I have a lot of that inside me right now, and hearing GG let it out makes me want to release it too so it doesn’t keep growing inside of me until  I explode.  I am letting go of trying to please others; so I say, “fuck your opinion.”  I then hit the main cause of my anger losing my father and the feeling of wanting to die too but knowing he wouldn’t want that and that he sent me on to keep living my mission.  I go into moving from Florida, a place where I felt things were really happening, to Arkansas, an unfamiliar area where I feel like I don’t even know who resides here besides me and my pain.  I then hit on the nightmares that I get every night about watching my father die in front of me.  I then go into self-analysis, quitting drugs that I was using to cope and numb myself, discovering the evil and anger I feel, but still trying to improve myself even if it’s in a violent way.  Then I go into the loneliness I feel, the idea of me being an actor on a stage who others see only an exterior view of, while holding all this rage inside me over this loss, and the concluding expression for that, my primal scream that is this poem.  My last section wraps it up with coming to terms with the my sense of reason being broken, which is why I’ve chosen a derelict like GG to journey through my dark night of the soul with, but leaving a little glimmer of hope in saying it is a hell BRIGHT Horizon, meaning to me that I’m still moving forward, maybe not entirely straight, but headed somewhere.  Anywhere.  Away from the darkness I currently reside in.

Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why? The section of being on my own and having no way home was very difficult for me to come to terms with.  It strikes at the heart of how I am feeling now that my dad is dead.  I’ve lost that deep sense of security and safety.   I’m in transition, trying to find a spot of ground to build a new foundation on.  I still haven’t found it and that scares the hell out of me.
