140 Backstory of the Poem
“Cloud Audience”

Where
were you when you started to actually write the poem? And please describe the place in great
detail. In
my study on computer on my desk which is located in corner next to a
window. On the wall there are framed posters, one celebrating Japanese
girls, the other boys. To the left of the desk is a printer About a
foot away is a futon in sitting position. Behind it is the second
window. Both windows have dark brown floor-length drapes. On
either side of this window are two Japanese silk paintings. To the left is a
door to a glass enclosed porch area with two shelf bookcases along all
walls, in which are stored my large collection of books. The third
wall, across from the desk is a old misty sea-side painting, first
belonging to my grandmother, then my mother and now me. Beside the painting is
a six-shelf bookcase with more books and teaching materials. Next to the
bookcase is a closet. On the farther side of the closet door are six hooks
mounted on a board. It is hidden by a door on the adjoining wall that leads
out of the room.

with us? The final draft has two lines less than the first draft:
Clouds fascinate me, therefore have become the
subject of at least two poems
I would hope to arouse some appreciation of
clouds in my readers.
Cloud Audience
Every summer the St Louis
Symphony performs
on Art Hill in front of the Art
Museum
to thousands of people from
grandparents to babies
of all ethnic groups and races,
bringing blankets, chairs, food
and cold
drinks.
Pale rosy clouds line the
stage’s shell top
while above the hill, variously hued masses
begin to gather.
When warm dusk tones turn to
cooler dark hues
they arrange themselves;
in
cloud puff rows of a sky concert hall
to listen contentedly as a
gentle evening breeze wafts
musical notes upward,
and with rumbling thunder
applaud enthusiastically
at the
music’s ending.
She received a Fulbright Scholarship to Pakistan while
teaching at Lindenwood University.
