***Carol Berg’s “Moon Child” is #234 in the never-ending series
called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem.  All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece. (Right: Carol Berg in November of 2020. Copyright permission granted by Carol Berg)

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? I was part of an on-line group writing a poem a day in October, 2019 and the prompt given to us that day was the moon. I was at my office and had written the phrase, “I have a moon inside of me” that just sort of came to me. I was leafing through the magazine Artscope (https://artscopemagazine.com/) which I often do to get a word bank when the phrase “a rare disease” leaped out at me from one of the pages and I was off.

The poem was one of those that came fairly easily, until the end. I was stuck after the phrase “Little moon dolls.” I let the poem sit and came up with several endings, one about love that I didn’t like at all. Then, maybe a week or two later, I was walking with my husband, son, and our dog when my husband said something about “sense” and I thought “moon-sense.” I wrote that down on my phone, and got home and looked up the moon’s cycle on Google and came up with the ending I was finally happy with. (Above Right: Carol walking her dog in November of 2020. Copyright granted by Carol Berg)

Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?  And please describe the place in great detail. I was in my office at work. I am a writing tutor at Pine Manor College, a small college in Chestnut Hill. My office is quite small with three desks crammed into it. One desk, against the back wall, is where I sit to write on my computer. The walls are painted a mute white with pink overtones. I have a corkboard on a side wall where I put postcards of art. One the wall behind me is a black African cloth with an embroidered outline of a Madonna and child. Then, kitty-corner, is a round small desk I was sitting at when writing this poem, with my red spiral notebook and magazine. A thick but short wooden bookcase sits next to that, and then by the front door is another desk I rarely use. (Above Left: Carol Berg's writing space. Copyright granted by Carol Berg)

What month and year did you start writing this poem? October 6, 2019.

How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?) I’m not sure how many exact drafts because of that ending. Maybe 5 or 6? (Left:  Carol Berg's view from her writing space. Copyright granted by Carol Berg)

Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version?  And can you share them with us? Well, the next day I was trying to work on that ending and I wrote this: “Now, I keep my moon on a retractable leash, like a tongue.”  Terrible, right? (Left: Carol Berg's rough draft of "Moon Child." Copyright granted by Carol Berg)

What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem? This is a poem I like because to me, it is pure invention. Obviously, I don’t have a moon inside of me, but sometimes I feel strange and weird and I might as well have something like a moon inside of me. Something that is making me do things or think things that I can’t otherwise understand I do or think. I’m thinking readers of the poem might relate to feeling strange.

Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why? Probably the part about mistaking it for religion. I grew up in a fairly religious home and went to a very religious school. I have a lot of issues with my religion. I’m still trying to work those out.

Has this poem been published before?  And if so where? Yes, this poem was published in Midway Journal. It was an expedited submission so I was particularly excited that they took my poem.

Moon Child

I have a moon inside of me.

It’s a rare disease, I know.

When I was young, I mistook it

for religion, the way I would glow

when my moon was gibbous. I examined

my illumination in the bathroom mirror

while my older sister banged on the locked door.

“Mom, she’s taking too long!” she’d complain.

I knew I couldn’t explain. Sometimes my moon

would move into my mouth and strange words

broke out. “Quiverilly!” I’d plead to my dad.

He just looked away. Sometimes I’d feel my full

moon in my right knee and jump and jump

in my backyard at dusk, underneath the old apple tree

along with all those lightning bugs I thought were little

creatures born from the moon. My little moon dolls.

These days, I keep my moon mostly behind my heart, where its

phases are quick as heart-beats, one second full, the next

waning. I used to think it was love. Now I have the moon-sense

to know it’s probably just reflection, or some rotational pull.
