***Rose Skye’s “It’s Complicated” is #250 in the never-ending series called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem.  All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece.

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem
from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain to the final form?
This poem started with me wanting to write about my frustrations with things in my own life being complicated and using that phrase to explain it all away. Many times, when I’m writing, it will start with a single line or a single phrase, and I will turn it over and over again in my mind until I get an idea of what story I want to tell with the poem. Once I started writing this particular poem, it was a stream of consciousness. I was surprised at how I wanted to end it, considering my initial frustration with explaining things away by saying “it’s complicated,” but I think maybe the poem tried to teach me that lesson. (Above Right:  Rose Skye.  Copyright by Rose Skye)

Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?  And please describe the place in great detail. I was sitting at the marble top dining room table in the corner of the humble two-bedroom apartment. It was an ah-ha moment in the mid-afternoon while I was by myself working on some other pieces for the poetry collection, I released in 2018. Most of my poetry is handwritten before being typed. I think, like most writers, I’m obsessed with notebooks and pens, and I love getting to use them when fleshing out ideas. (Left:  Rose Skye's writing space.  Credit and Copyright by Rose Skye.)

What month and year did you start writing this poem? I don’t exactly remember, and this is really bad of me because I don’t always date my poetry. It’s a bad habit that I need to break.

How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?). This poem has only had two drafts, and not much changed between them except the order in which some of the lines are presented. The lines themselves did not change, nor did a majority of the language. (Unfortunately, I do not have the notebook with me at the moment since I am staying with family).

Were there any lines in your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version? And can you share them with us? Nope! All of these lines appeared in the original draft, just in a different order at first. (Left"  Rose Skye's journal and notes. Credit and Copyright by Rose Skye)

What do you want the readers of this poem to take from this poem? I want the readers to understand how complications affect their own lives, and hopefully, they can identify with how unavoidable they are as a part of life.

Otherwise, I don’t really like to dictate what people get from my poetry. If someone were to read the poem and get something completely different from it, I wouldn’t be upset. I like how poetry becomes part creation of the reader once it has been released into the world. (Right:  Web logo photo from Rose Skye's web page)

Which part of the poem was the most emotional for you to write and why? The most emotional lines for me to write were:

You can meet people

Who lessen your complicated

When they twine their fingers with yours

Then your world steadies to the sound of their heartbeat

And your pulses dance close to each other

And though the complications lay on the horizon

Of every word spoken after that moment

At least

They could help you find a little peace

This was the most emotional for me because I think this is the part of the poem where I feel like I give permission for the stillness and those special moments that allow you to be present and forget the many complications of the world. For some of us, those moments feel like only memories, or maybe we are starting something new that is providing the fresh excitement of those moments, but either way, those moments are so special to me that I got a bit emotional writing about them.  (Above Left: Web Logo Photo from Rose Skye's web page)

Has this poem been published before? And if so, where? This poem has not been published. I usually perform it at poetry events.

It’s Complicated

There is a moment

When you realize

“It’s complicated” is so much more

Than something people say

It is the root of life

Examples:

You notice that too much sunshine

Will wrinkle your fragile skin

And suddenly your relationship with summer

Is complicated

You find out that touching cold snow

For too long burns and bites

And your love affair with winter

Becomes complicated

You learn that your parents lied to you

About so much more than Santa Clause

And more to protect themselves than you

Then loving them is complicated

You’ll wonder why your true love broke your heart

And yet you sit there waiting like a loyal pup

For their return

Hoping they’ll approve of your patience, pat your head, pull you close

Because heartbreak is complicated

The real world will slap you, repeatedly, with a glove

Filled with all the money you wish you had

And when you think its done, after begging and saving your coins

It takes them, and stuffs them into the glove and resumes

And you learn that surviving is complicated

Ghosts mean death is complicated

Stars evolving into greater magnificence means the universe is complicated

Religious war means God is complicated

And the fact that he created us then said that he believes

Some of us to be abominations means divinity is complicated

Yellow lights make driving complicated

Should I speed up, slow down, or come to a screeching halt

Kind of complicated

Wishing I could take other’s pain away

Means empathy is complicated

Wishing I could take my own pain away

Means staying is complicated

Looking up and wishing into a silent sky

Means faith is complicated

We are natured and nurtured in complications

And only in scaling back the magnitude of moments can we find some simplicity

You can meet people

Who lessen your complicated

When they twine their fingers with yours

Then your world steadies to the sound of their heartbeat

And your pulses dance close to each other

And though the complications lay on the horizon

Of every word spoken after that moment

At least

They could help you find a little peace

So when someone asks

What happened?

How did it begin?

What caused it to end?

What’s it like starting over?

What’s it like moving on?

The most concise way to explain it all

Is by saying

It’s complicated

***Deana Nantz’s “Your Room –Sky High” is #249 in the never-ending series called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem.  All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece.

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form?
I had written this poem after buying a house that needed repair.  I have two skylights that almost cover the entire wood ceiling in my family room. I stared at them one evening as I watched pine needles and poplar leaves skid down the left one, which holds more sap and fog than the right light.  The window seal is broken and needs replacing or it will always look fogged. My skylights are the eyes of my house, which made me think about eyes as the windows to the soul, and how my eyes lie because they sometimes fake being okay; what lay behind them needed work.  Houses need work.  Souls need healing.  I was alone in a house that I bought on my own without a partner.  I had to look inward and assess why I felt lonely.  Why do I or we as a collective soul pretend to be okay and hide away from the world when we need repair? (Above Left: Deana Nantz's family room. Credit and Copyright by Deana Nantz)

Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?  And please describe the place in great detail.
This poem was conceived in the fall, my least favorite season because the sun is moving away from me.  The fall makes me anxious.  I sat on my single woman couch with my fluffy pillows and looked up at my skylights and thought about the elements coming down on the roof.  “Pushed and pried” has a double meaning.  We are affected by the world—damaged.  Once we are aware of this damage, we must make a choice—move forward or continue to destruct.  You can look pretty and put together on the outside, but on the inside, you can be chaos on a cellular and emotional level.   (Above Right, Below Left, and Below Right:  Deana Nantz's skylights in her family room.  Credit and Copyright by Deana Nantz)

What month and year did you start writing this poem?
I wrote this poem in November of 2012 on a night where I was trapped inside my head and full of longing.

How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?)
This is the final draft of the poem published in my book, Wood, Glass, and Girl about a woman who learns the secrets of her house and the difficulties of being alone, married, and then divorced.  She finds joy at the end of the collection when she realizes that she need not look outside herself for fulfillment.  I did not keep the notes I made on paper, but I did give “shadowed” and “lonely” their own lines for visual and rhythmic power.

Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version?  And can you share them with us?
I do not think I addressed the house as “you” in the first draft.  The word “you” gives the poem two people having a conversation.  We talk to ourselves the most.  “You” often shows up in literature as the ashamed “I.”  (Deana Nantz sitting on her single woman couch with her dog. Copyright by Deana Nantz)

What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem?  The ending of the poem is penultimate.  I want readers to see that in poetry as in life there are flashes of awareness and insight.  “All windows must be repaired / no matter how high up in the air,” holds literal and figurative significance.  My sky lights are 30 feet up in the air; I am a woman who is 5’10.  And no matter how “tall” we feel, life can bring us to our knees.  We are a constant work in progress.  Awareness is the gateway to healing and positivity.

Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why?
The most emotional moment in the poem are the lines, “A Soul so big it needs a cathedral ceiling. / My soul sick as a secret searched for light.”  These lines reflect the enormity of dark emotions.  Poets are sensitive people.  They are driven by sensibility which can be overwhelming.  We need room to expand and reflect.
Has this poem been published before?  And if so where? My book, Wood, Glass, and Girl, was published in May 2020.

Your Room—Sky High

I have blue eyes
but they lie.
You have skylights in the family room.

A soul so big it needs a cathedral ceiling.
My soul, sick as a secret, searched for light.
People fall in love through double pained windows
until they lose their seals.  One of yours fogged.
Pine and poplar debris skidded down glass,
while wind and water pushed and pried.

Restless room,
shadowed
lonely.
I, unaware, that all windows must be repaired
no matter how high up in the air.
