****Director Patrick Emralino ’s screenplay The Search for Sundown, Texas is #206 in the never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt.  All INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION links are at the end of this piece.

Name of the screenplay and were there other names you
considered that you would like to share with us?
The title of my screenplay is “The Search for Sundown, Texas.”  It’s a western action/adventure script.  It took me a bit to come up with that title, as I went through a few generic-sounding possibilities like “Our West” or “Red Sunset.”  As the story took shape, the title slowly revealed itself.  Now I can’t imagine any other title for it. (Above Right and Below Left:  Director Patrick Emralino in December 2018)

What is the date you began writing this screenplay and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction?
I started thinking about writing a script in the western genre towards the end of 2018, but didn’t start actually writing this screenplay until January 2019. I finished the first draft four months later.  However, I continued working on it through the end of the year.  I recently finished a polished third draft of it on June 2020.

Where did you do most of your writing? And please describe in detail.
I started writing this screenplay for a feature writing class while I was studying abroad in London. It was a unique experience for me as it was my first time studying abroad and spending time in Europe.  In between exploring the streets of the immense city and catching lots of great theater, I worked on this script in my student flat as well as in a few different coffee shops throughout Central London. I continued working on it when I came back from studying abroad, but my habits stayed the same.  I either wrote it in my apartment or in a bookstore or coffee shop depending on my mood. (Above Right: Patrick Emralino in January 2019)

What were your writing habits while writing this screenplay - did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day?
I found that I was most productive during the evening hours.  I would spend the day doing other things, like exploring the city or getting other work done.  At night is when my creative energy was the strongest.  There were a few times where Is typed up very late, as late as 5 a.m. to continue working.  I like to type on my laptop directly, whether it’s outlining or writing pages.  I have a notebook for misc. notes, but I mostly type them out.  A common habit for me while writing is pacing the room or going for a walk around the city as a break when I was in London.  I found that movement and changing scenery helps me think.  (Above Left: Patrick Emralino in June of 2019)

What is the summary of your screenplay?
My screenplay follows Edgar, can gunslinger in the 1800’s who is an enforcer for a major railroad company that forces farmers and settlers out of their properties for their land rights. The head of this railroad company, Byron, found Edgar as an orphan at a young age and raised him to be a ruthless warrior to be feared.  After a mishap results in Edgar accidentally shooting the son of a rancher, he starts to question his allegiances. As he goes through this crisis, Byron tasks him with tracking down Sylvia, a mysterious woman who is on the trail of a mythical treasure left behind by a legendary bandit.  He had built a paradise for him and his gang, naming it Sundown, and hid the rest of his loot underneath it.  Byron wants the treasure all to his own, and trusts Edgar to capture Sylvia and find the loot.  However, Edgar sees this as an opportunity for redemption and instead aids Sylvia in her search for the treasure.  As they fight through other malicious competing parties and the harsh terrain of the wild west, Edgar and Sylvia start to bond and find kinship in each other.  Their search takes them to be the fabled town of Sundown and unexpectedly find it populated by all the people forced out of their homes by the railroads. With Byron and the rest of his men bearing down on them, Edgar and Sylvia arm up to defend the townspeople from those that are coming to exploit them, leading to an explosive and emotional finale.  (Above Right: Patrick Emralino in London. June 2019)

Please include just one excerpt.  This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer
Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write?  And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? *and humor is one of many emotions.
I like this particular excerpt (page 42) because it’s where our two main characters finally open up to each other on an intimate level.  The whole time before this, they are both guarded and headstrong fighters in their own right, but in a moment of vulnerability, Edgar reveals to Sylvia that he never learned to read a watch.   Thus, revealing some background on his character and taking a big step in his arc by breaking down his façade of a tough as nails gunslinger.  This action also softens up Sylvia’s attitude towards him, and the respect they have for each other starts to grow from this moment. I believe every relationship, whether platonic or romantic, has a moment like that, where both parties reveal their true selves to each other, thus elevating the relationship.  IT was important to me that these two characters had a moment like that, so it was clear that there was more to them than just the archetypes they were based on. (Above Left:  The streets of London.  Photo attributed to Patrick Emralino)

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt? Funnily enough, this was one of the few portions of the script that styed the same throughout.  It was a scene I wrote on instinct, and it remained virtually untouched throughout the revision process.  Most of the other script changed, but having that moment in there from the beginning was paramount.

Has this screenplay been made into a film? And if NOT which actors would you like to portray your characters in this screenplay? This screenplay has not been made into a film, though I hope that is in its future soon.  Adventure films like this are what I grew up with, and I hope to see more films like those in theaters.  I don’t really have specific actors in mind for this one.  But I would like if the main characters like Edgar and Sylvia were played by an actor of any ethnicity, which Sylvia is a Latinx character.

How many pages?  What does that equate to how long the film would be? My third draft of this screenplay ended up being 119 ages.  That’s a pretty standard length for an action film that’s around two hours.  The usual rule is a page approximates a minute of screen time.  My first draft was a little long at 152 pages, while my second draft I did an overhaul on the story and came in at just 109 pages.  I think my newest draft has achieved a happy medium.

Patrick Emralino
was born in the Philippines and immigrated to the US in 2001.  He’s the first generation of his family to attend college in America.  From an early age, he felt the undeniable need to write stories that blended his life experiences with his love of action, adventure, and science fiction.  Writing screenplays that inspire and entertain isn’t just something that’s interesting to him, it’s something he feels compelled and obligated to do.  He’s recently graduated from FSU College of Motion Picture Arts with an MFA in screenwriting and currently pursuing new writing projects.
