Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? I'm sharing A Secret, a Safari, a Second Chance with you. I was asked my writing colleagues and friends (Donna Alward, Nina Singh and Barbara Wallace) if I'd like to take up the fourth book in Destination Brides, a mini series they were planning. It fitted perfectly into my schedule and I was thrilled to take part.
What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? A Secret, a Safari, a Second Chance was written in the autumn of 2018, delivered in early January and published in August 2019.
Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work? And please describe in detail. I write in my office. My desk is fairly new and with plenty of room. It's pale grey with a light oak top and I treated myself to it when I moved a couple of years ago.
On it there's a photograph of my late husband, a Rita finalist's flag, a mug from my "Ice Cream" mini series stuffed with pens, hand cream, markers, notebooks, project files and a basket filled with "stuff".
The walls of my office are pale grey, there is a drawing I commissioned of Dora, a dachshund who appeared in my book The Billionaire's Convenient Bride, on the wall above my desk. Propped on that is a Shaker angel made for me by one of my dear fans.
Behind me are bookshelves and cupboards filled with files and promo stuff, photographs of my children and grandchildren and a lot of mess.
What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? My writing habits are very much the day job. I'm usually at my desk by 9 am unless I have other appointments and I work until about 4 pm. I sometimes listen to music, although if the work is flowing I don't notice when it stops. I drink tea, mostly. Sometimes mint tea but mostly a good strong Assam with a dash of milk, no sugar. I frequently find that it's gone cold... And I write directly onto my laptop.

She swallowed, looking at the men in dinner jackets, the women in their beautiful clothes and had a moment of regret for the head-turning red curls, wishing she was wearing something a little less ... classic.
Wanting, just for a moment, to feel that alive again.
But only for a moment.
She’d been there and done that. She had Hannah, with her own Titian curls and Kit’s bright blue eyes as a constant reminder of the night she’d lost her head.
Her baby girl. The love of her life.
She knew she should tell him, that he had a right to know, but her world was complicated enough. She wasn’t going to stick around and risk blundering into the man who’d made her laugh, made her cry, made love to her with a sweet passion that had changed everything in one starlit night.
The man who, at the fierce banging on his beach cabin door, the call that he was needed, had rolled out of bed, pulling on his jeans and grabbing his sweatshirt. All he’d said was ‘Stay out of sight...’ on his way out.
She had waited until the first pink edge of dawn appeared on the horizon and then she had run back to her grandmother’s house and thrown her things into a bag. Nana had been asleep, so she’d left a note, caught the first ferry to the mainland and been back in London twenty-four hours later.
Had he waited, holding his breath, waiting for the call from one of the less glossy gossip mags asking for a comment on the story they were about to run. My Night of Sex... Sex in the Sand... Abandoned After a Night of Sex...
There had been stories in the past and even if, some of them were pure fiction and others heavily embellished to make better headlines, he had clearly made the most of his youthful fame. There were still photographs of him with beautiful women but these days no one was talking, and neither would she. Not even when, weeks later, after her Finals were over, she had time to realise what was happening to her body and two pink lines changed her life forever.
She didn’t talk and she couldn’t call Kit.
The news had been full of the start of the single-handed round the world yacht race, or maybe that was all she was noticing because Kit was the skipper that every camera was watching, the man already making the headlines after rumours that his entry had caused a rift with his family.
Calling him on the satellite link would have been a very public way to inform him that he about to become a father. While the headlines would have cheered a newspaper man’s heart and set twitter alight, the trolls would have been out in force. She would have been mobbed by the press, her poor grandmother would have been under siege, and she would have had to go into hiding.
It had given her plenty of time to think. Time for her heart to stop when, two months into the race his radio went silent after a storm. She’d hugged her belly protectively during the ten long days before he was spotted by search aircraft.
The photographs showed that his damaged mast had been lashed back into place and the pundits speculated with sickening detail how he must have climbed in heavy seas to repair it.
Worse, he’d signalled that his communication equipment had been smashed in the storm that hit his mast, but he was okay and was continuing with the race.
He’d finally limped home after more than four months in third place. A great feat of sailing according to the yachting community.
Eve didn’t care about the sailing or the press, she was just furious that he would recklessly endanger himself for piece of silverware to stick on the mantlepiece.
Had he no feelings for his family and what they must have gone through?
She knew all about recklessness. Her mother had taken risks and died; she would protect the precious little girl growing inside her from that kind of pain.
Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write? And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? This is Eve, who has reluctantly returned to Nantucket with her little girl to visit her sick grandmother. On her last visit, to bury her mother, she met the charismatic yachtsman Kit Merchant, a meeting that would change her life forever. and now her grandmother has died and she's trapped on the island.
The last place she wants to be is a gala evening at the Merchant Seafarer Resort even though she knows that Kit's bitter quarrel with his father has kept him away from the island. But then, late in the evening, he arrives. He's there, within touching distance. His family are Nantucket royalty and if he discovers that she has hidden his a daughter from him,, if he goes for custody, she will have no chance.
In this moment we're with her as she relives the decisions she made, remembers the fear that her baby's father might have perished in a single-handed round the world yacht race, remembers her anger that he would put himself at such risk. Remembers the death of her mother. She relives the fear, the desperation, the anger that have fuelled her decisions and made her the woman she has become.
Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt. There are always deletions and edits, but I do them directly onto the laptop as I go. I'm a total punster and I don't write a dirty draft because I don't know what's going to happen until my characters show me the way. If something happens in the story as I'm writing that changes something that happens earlier in the ms, I have to go back fix it then, before I move on. This makes me slower than some of my colleagues, but when I reach the end of my book, it is actually the end. I will read it through to check for any errors that have crept in – especially of the cut and paste variety – but then it's off to my editor (Bryony Green). So, I'm sorry, but I can’t show you marked-up rough drafts because I don’t print.
Liz Felding grew up in a pretty Thames side town a few miles from London.
Her first success as a writer came at school when she won a hymn writing competition. The prize was an Easter Egg.
Itchy feet took her to Zambia at the age of 20 where she was an active member of the Lusaka Theatre Club (best supporting actress 1968!) and met her civil engineer husband there whilst he was playing John de Stogumber in St Joan, and she was the pageboy to the Earl of Warwick. He swore it was the purple tights that got him. They lived in Qatar, the UAE, Kenya, Botswana and Bahrain.
She started writing when her children were in preschool, writing stories for the children’s picture paper, Twinkle and the iconic childrens’ radio programme, Listen With Mother.
Liz’s first romance, An Image of You, was published by Mills and Boon in 1992. She has since had 75+ books published by Harlequin Mills & Boon, Scarlet and Tule and has sold more than 15 million copies in print.
She has been nominated for many awards (full list), including the prestigious RITA award eight times, winning with The Best Man & the Bridesmaid and The Marriage Miracle, and the RoNA Rose five times, winning with A Family of His Own.
Liz has recently moved to West Sussex (it’s Pooh Bear country) and she is badly missing the garden she created with her late husband. Her new ground floor apartment has a neglected courtyard garden and she has been busy planting spring bulbs, shrubs and roses, to create an outdoor space where she can take her laptop on warm days.
Liz hates exercise of any kind but has started weekly aquasize classes – it’s energetic, but her feet don’t hurt and she doesn’t get sweaty!
If Liz had to choose between giving up chocolate or cheese, she’d give up chocolate. However, she has no intention of giving up either.
Spare time is spent with her grandchildren, reading, and meeting fellow writers.
