What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I turned it in on February 1, 2018 so I probably started it about six months before that (August 2017).

Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work? And please describe in detail. I have an office in our house. The desk, desk chair, book shelves, and book case are all from garage sales or thrift shops. I have a few pieces of beloved art hanging and a bulletin board full of cards, photos, and memories. The valances are from a piece of barkcloth I found at an antique store in Florida with palm fronds and flowers on them. My mom made them for me. One window looks out on a wooded area.

What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I usually write in the afternoon on my laptop. I might have water but nothing else and the quieter the better.

SHE’S GOT THE GOODS . . .
As a former military spouse, Sarah Winston’s learned a little about organizing, packing, and moving. Her latest project sounds promising: a couple of tech-industry hipsters, newly arrived in her Massachusetts town, who need to downsize. Unfortunately, when Sarah tries to sell their stuff, she discovers it’s all stolen—and she’s the unwitting fence.

BUT SARAH’S PROBLEMS ARE JUST BEGINNING
Michelle, an old friend of Sarah’s from the Air Force base, is in line for a promotion—but not everyone is happy about it, and she’s been hit with an anonymous discrimination complaint. When one of the men she suspects is behind the accusations turns up dead in Michelle’s car, Sarah needs to clear Michelle’s name—as well as her own for selling hot merchandise. And she’ll have to do it while also organizing a cat lady’s gigantic collection of feline memorabilia, or they’ll be making room for Sarah in a jail cell . . .

Can you give the reader just enough information for them to understand what is going on in the excerpt? Sarah is arrested soon after the opening paragraph below. That evening she goes out with her friend Michelle, finds out about the discrimination complaint, and sees the man who Michelle thinks filed the complaint. Later they discover the man dead in Michelle’s car. Two friends, two big problems.

Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference. This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer. This is the opening paragraph: Two police cars screeched to a halt at the end of the driveway, lights flashing. I stared over at them and then at the half dozen people milling around the garage sale that I had just started fifteen minutes ago at 7:30 am. The handful of people browsing stopped what they were doing and turned to stare too. Doors popped open. Three officers jumped out. Unusual in these days of budgets cuts and officers riding alone that two were together. I didn’t recognize any of them because I was in Billerica, Massachusetts just north of my hometown of Ellington.

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write? And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? Writing the opening to any book is always difficult. I don’t know how many times I rewrote this but it was a lot. 

Other works you have published? This is the seventh book in the Sarah Winston Garage Sale mysteries. The first Tagged for Death was nominated for an Agatha award for best first novel.
