What is the date you
began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished
the piece of fiction? Began Spring of 2015, finished Summer of 2017.
Where did you do most of
your writing for this fiction work? And
please describe in detail. And can you
please include a photo? In
my home office (Below) in the mountains of Western North Carolina.
What were your writing
habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to
music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I write best early in the morning when I’m almost
still in a dream. I do my editing in the
afternoon.
What is the summary of
this specific fiction work? A blended family comes apart after a drunk driving
accident leaves the daughter of one parent dead – and the son of the other
parents charged with manslaughter.
Can you give the reader
just enough information for them to understand what is going on in the excerpt?
Leigh and Peter have
split up, reluctantly, torn apart by Leigh’s grief and Peter’s fear for his
son.

The excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer. “No one should be forced
to decide whether to be a parent first or a spouse. If this were a traditional nuclear family, if
she and Peter were the parents of the same shared children –these problems
would never have come up . . . . No couple could ever hope to forsake all
others, not when their hearts already belonged to the children who came before.”
Why is this excerpt so
emotional for you? And can you describe
your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? I’m a mother, and the thought of losing a child is the
most harrowing experience I can imagine.
Then compound that with your marriage falling apart at the time when you
need your spouse the most.
Bonnie Kistler is a former Philadelphia trial lawyer. Born and raised in the horse country of
Pennsylvania, she attended Bryn Mawr College, where she graduated magna cum
laude, with Honors in English literature, and she received her law degree from
the University of the Pennsylvania Law School, where she was a moot court
champion and legal writing instructor. She
spent her law career in private practice with major law firms, first in
Anchorage, Alaska, where she met and married her husband and later in
Philadelphia. Peer-rated as
Distinguished for both legal ability and ethical standards, she successfully tried cases in federal and state courts across
the country. She also taught writing
skills to lawyers and lectured frequently to professional organizations and
industry groups. She and her husband now
live in Florida and the mountains of western North Carolina. They have two daughters.
