****Derek Birks’s “The Last of the Romans: Fight or Die” is #212 in the never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt.  


Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? The Last of the Romans is the title but I also considered Dux. 

What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I started in December 2018 and finished in July 2019. (Below Left) In between those dates, I wrote little until early March 2019 when I had a contract from a publisher.

Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work? And please describe in detail. And can you please include a photo? I wrote the entire book in my study – actually in my previous house in Berkshire in England – image attached.

What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I tend to write during the course of a long morning though I can write at any time of day – or evening. When I write I am fuelled by a constant supply of coffee but I rarely eat much – don’t like sticky fingers on the laptop! I generally listen to music when I write and have some pieces which identify with particular characters. Music shuts out other sounds – for example I find background conversation very distracting. I also find music helpful in shaping my mood, especially if I’m writing a particularly emotive scene – like a fight or intimacy. 

Everything is written on my laptop – the only exception being occasional notes I make either on paper or my tablet if I’m not at my desk. If I have a plot issue to work out I tend to do something to clear my mind such as walking or swimming. I find that I can work out any problems using that method.

Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference. This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer. 

This is the opening page of the book:

Brushing aside a handful of unruly red hair, Ambrosius squinted across at the other occupant of the bed. He always slept alone – yet he had allowed the girl to stay. Dear Christ, he was surely growing softer by the day! Sleeping alone made a lot of sense; it was safer. His work was bloody and covert – his mandate delivered where no-one ever saw or heard. If ever a man was born to dwell on his own in the shadows, it was Ambrosius Honorius Aurelianus.

For the past three years Rome’s supreme military commander, the Magister Utriusque Militiae, Flavius Aetius, had sent Ambrosius wherever trouble erupted across the failing empire. Wherever an army was too many, or an assassin too few, he and his band of disparate bucellarii were despatched - and death went along for the ride. They slew every zealot, every ambitious politician, every fool and murderer, across the empire from the west coast of Galicia to eastern Thrace. In truth, Ambrosius and his comrades did little else but send men to an early grave. 

Since he was recruited in Gallia, he reflected that his own fortunes had become inextricably harnessed to those of Magister Aetius. He could not resist a grim smile of admiration for the man who, against all the odds, still held the fate of the western empire in his firm grip. Without him, Ambrosius would still be a renegade bandit living among the Franks in north-western Gallia. Instead he was the commander of an elite band of mounted warmongers and carried the rank of dux. He was both feared and despised by his enemies - and very likely by some of the imperial guard as well. 

Thus, Ambrosius slept alone; yet, there she lay… half-covered by the coarse blanket. So, yes, he was getting soft.

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write? And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? This extract has to set the story up and get the reader’s interest. The story is about a Roman imperial soldier and his sometimes tortuous relationship with a Saxon girl. I spent a lot of time reworking it because it introduces the main characters – one of whom is a real historical figure, Ambrosius Aurelianus (Left) whose early life is unknown. It also sets the context within which he operates.


Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt. This is how the original start of the book looked and the main difference is that I introduced the girl at the start:

Wherever trouble sprouted across the empire… wherever an army was too many or an assassin too few, Ambrosius Aurelianus and his barely-controlled bucellarii were despatched. And if ever there was a man born to dwell in the shadows, it was Ambrosius. His work was bloody and covert – his instructions delivered where no-one saw or heard. It was a way of life, riding hard from province to province with death storming along in his wake. For three years the Roman Magister Militum, Flavius Aetius, employed him thus but the sudden demise of the Hun king, Attila, changed everything. Peace came to Rome – albeit a fragile peace brokered by exhausted combatants, yet peace nonetheless. 

Derek Birks was born in Hampshire in England but spent his teenage years in Auckland, New Zealand, where he still has strong family ties. He now lives in Dorset.

For many years he taught history in a secondary school but took early retirement to concentrate on writing. Apart from his writing, he spends his time gardening, travelling, and walking. 

Derek is interested in a wide range of historical themes, but at the start of his writing career he focused on the late medieval period. He writes action-packed fiction which is rooted in accurate history. 


His debut historical novel, Feud, is set in the period of the Wars of the Roses and is the first of a series entitled Rebels & Brothers which follows the fortunes of the fictional Elder family. A second series, The Craft of Kings, followed

Since Derek’s interest in the Wars of the Roses period goes beyond fiction, he has produced almost fifty non-fiction podcasts about the subject for those who want to explore what really happened.

Derek’s most recent series starts with The Last of the Romans, an Amazon bestseller and a change of time period and setting. It is set in turbulent fifth-century Europe and centres upon the shadowy historical figure of Ambrosius Aurelianus. The sequel, Britannia: World’s End, is out now and a third book is in the pipeline.

Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? The name of my book is Tales From Los Cabos. I considered other names such as “What Happens in Cabo Stays in Cabo” and “Sex, Drugs, and Musica Ranchera”, but after a poll on Facebook Tales From Los Cabos was the winner. I also liked that title the most. I am thinking about writing a sequel, Tales From Los Cabos, part 2.


What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I wrote the first short stories for this book in 2001. then I wrote some more in 2002 and 2003, but after that I stopped, not thinking about publishing them. In 2018 I found those stories in an old box, and I edited and re-wrote them. I also added new short stories that I wrote in 2018. I finished my manuscript in December 2018.


Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work?  And please describe in detail.  And can you please include a photo? I did my writing in different places, since I rented an apartment in 2001. Nowadays I do most of my writing at my kitchen table in my trailer on my property. I am living in a trailer, since my house is not built yet. Construction is paused at the moment due to covid-19.


What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I write best in the mornings, but sometimes I also write in the evenings until late at night. I usually drink tea when I write. Sometimes I listen to music, but most of the time I write in absolute silence.


Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference.  This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer. Page 138 (in paperback)

Excerpt: The woman returned a week later, alone. The tiger was pacing again, ignoring the humans that gawked at him. When she arrived, he felt her presence, looked up, and walked over to her. The other humans had already left, and they were alone now. The woman took a seat on a bench near the cage and the tiger lay down by her side, separated by the bars and wire. They were so close that she could touch him.

A bond grew between them and she came to see him often, her heart bleeding for his misery and hunger, but glad that he somehow found some sort of harmony in her presence – as little as it was. She made the long drive nearly every weekend, to spend some time with him. Every time she visited the tiger, he would stop pacing and look into her eyes, without any menace. His eyes conveyed his understanding of her compassion and love. They had bonded, and he trusted her. She was the only one he felt at peace with, and wherever she sat, he would lie at her feet, content and relaxed.

One day, the woman made him a promise. She always felt terrible at the sight of his bones protruding through his skin and the desolation of his life. She promised him that she would get him out of there. She didn’t know how and when, but she was going to do it. She continued visiting him, but one day she stopped coming.

Mathilda understood much of what humans told her, and she remembered that tiger. He had died many years ago, all alone, skin over bones, withered away in his cage. The woman already knew that, and she was heartbroken over it. She had been unable to keep her promise to him, but she made a vow to keep her promise in his honor and make it her mission to get Mathilda, and all the other animals that were languishing in their cells, out of there. She gave the spider monkey her name, Mathilda

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write?  And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? “The woman” in this story is me. I am the one who bonded with that tiger in that horrible zoo and who failed at getting him out of there. When I found out that he had died, I cried, it broke my heart. I started a campaign to rescue all the other animals and close down that zoo, which turned into a year-and-a-half-long tough battle against corruption. 

During my campaign I bonded with some zoo animals, such as a coatimundi, the raccoons, some foxes, a shy coyote, and especially Mathilda, a lovely, sweet spider monkey. Mathilda lives in a jungle sanctuary now and when I visit her, she always greets me with a loving hug. Although this story is very different from all the other short stories in the book, it means a lot to me to share this. Writing this short story brought back all the emotions and frustrations of my campaign, but it also brought back that incredible feeling of victory when I finally succeeded and got the animals either rehabilitated and released into the wild or sent to sanctuaries, and I closed down that zoo.


Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked-up rough drafts of this excerpt? I don’t remember any deletions. I think I may have deleted some details from the campaign to center the story more around Mathilda.
