****Jeff Lyons’s Terminus Station is #175 in the never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt.  All INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION links are at the end of this piece

What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished this piece of fiction? I began writing this piece a year ago and published it in December 2019. I’m doing a new line edit on the piece and will republish in June 2020.  (The beauty of self-publishing.)
Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work?  And please describe in detail.  And can you please include a photo? I have a small desk where I do everything, except sleep and shower.  It has a computer, a lamp, a microphone and webcam (for all my teaching and story consulting online), a cat that jumps up and down to bug me, books, and hand sanitizer (the times we’re in). There is also a window right behind my monitor where I can see the world, such that it is. Most times I keep the blinds closed. The world is not very pretty right now (the George Floyd incident is only a week old as of this writing).

What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on the laptop; specific time of day? The only thing I drink is coffee (and water).  Lots of it.  Way too much of it. I listen to music for sure… usually epic music (“Two Steps from Hell,” my favorite) and movie soundtrack compilations on Youtube. I work throughout the day and night. I have no set writing times.  I’m a terrible example of writer-work-ethic. Don’t do what I do. I distract myself all day long with social media, client sessions, web browsing, Netflix, a million little things to distract me, but I’m still productive. I can’t just turn the world off.  I need the constant feedback and distraction to work.  Crazy … I know… not how you’re supposed to do it.  Well… screw the rules.  It works for me. Everything is done on my computer, no paper and pens. I think with my fingers moving. It’s kind of weird … if my fingers aren’t moving my brain stops thinking.  Like I said … don’t do what I do. I’m not a role model.

Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference.  This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer.

The maddening part, though, was that Ira knew what kind of man he was or, more correctly, what kind of man he was not. He had learned to keep ceilings low, horizons close, and any brass rings safely within arm’s length. A man’s reach should never exceed his grasp. That misquoted line from Robert Browning’s Andrea del Sarto was burned into his soul like a scarring brand, as were the twisted words he learned to use to soothe the wound, Or what’s a hell for? Sophie had inflicted that brand many years before, carefully teaching her only son not to run too fast or reach too far. The lessons always entailed a slap, or pinch, or worse. Sophie trained dogs for a living, and the same alpha-dog methods she used on pups, she used on him. Children and dogs have a great deal in common; they both crave love, and their spirits are easily broken. Ira hated dogs. (page 4)

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write?  And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? I love this excerpt because it captures the inner pain of the protagonist in a visceral and visual way that ties him to his story world. I feel his despair, his self-loathing. I remember writing this and feeling, “I have finally found out who this guy is.” Very satisfying.

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked-up rough drafts of this excerpt. Nope. What you see here is how it came out of me.  Although the reference to Robert Browning (Left) was later clarified as the poem might be too unknown to average readers. So I added,
“That misquoted line from Robert Browning’s Andrea del Sarto was burned into his soul like a scarring brand, as were the twisted words he learned to use to soothe the wound, Or what’s a hell for?”
This really helped, I think, to put the self-talk in a broader perspective and make the line pop more for the reader.
