****Susan Berliner’s short story “Wrong Road” from her short story collection George’s Mother & Other Weird Stories is #181 in the never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt.  All INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION links are at the end of this piece

Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? I wanted the name of this book to be one of the longer stories so I seriously considered titling it The Key and Other Weird Stories. That 8,000+ word story is the last tale in the book, but a cover of just a key or a key on a doorstep was too blah. I chose "George's Mother" because I love the image of a woman's hand reaching out of the grave—which is basically what that story is about.

What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I don't know the exact date I began writing these thirteen stories because I wrote them during the time I was working on a two-part dystopian series (The Touchers). I probably began in mid-2016; I finished the book in February, 2020 and it was published in March.

Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work?  And please describe in detail.  And can you please include a photo? I do all my writing on my laptop on my desk in the den. I face the wall and the shades are always down so I won't be distracted by anything interesting going on outside my windows.

What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I try to write every day from 10 am - 11 am, before I eat breakfast. I work in complete silence with the door closed and the house phone out of the room, creating one or two scenes directly on the laptop.

Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference.  This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer. The following excerpt is a scene from "Wrong Road" (p. 111-112) one of the stories in George's Mother and Other Weird Tales.

"Is anyone here?" Wendy called from the hallway.
"Be right down!" a woman's voice shouted.
Wendy entered a large room with two green sofas and several orange chairs positioned around an octagonal wooden table with yellow napkins and matching spork plastic utensils—spoons on one end and forks on the other. Wendy sat on one of the couches, picked up a spoon-fork, and twirled it in her fingers.
"Odd, isn't it?" the woman entering the room asked.
Looking up, Wendy met the eyes of a smiling brunette in her fifties, wiping her hands with a pink towel.
"That's the preferred silverware—or I should say plasticware because I haven't seen any metal cutlery. And they like bright colors." She dangled the towel in one hand and pointed to the neon green sofa with her other.
       "You're from the U.S.?"
The woman nodded. "I'm Selena McDermitt from Los Angeles."
"Wendy Jaraslaw from Jamestown, Ohio—near Dayton...How did you get here, Selena?"
"Like you, I slipped through an opening, hole, rift, tear, seam—whatever you want to call it—and ended up in The Land."
       "When did it happen?"
       "About two years ago."
Wendy leaned against the back of the couch and sighed. "Were you driving?" she asked.
Selena shook her head. "I was walking my dog in the park and Scruffy broke loose so I chased him, following his barks. When I heard him right next to me, but didn't see him, I reached out and..." She spread out her hands and shrugged. "Here I am."
       "You couldn't get back?"
Selena sat in the orange chair opposite Wendy and shook her head again. "The problem is that I thought I was still in the park. The scenery looked the same—more trees, trails, and lawns. And Scruffy was with me so we continued our walk. By the time I realized I was somewhere completely different and tried to retrace my steps, the opening was gone."
Wendy covered her eyes with her hands. "I need to go home," she whispered.
Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write?  And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? I like stories where people time travel or in the case of "Wrong Road," travel to another dimension. How would you feel if you were driving to work on a familiar highway like Wendy and suddenly didn't recognize anything on the road? I imagined how I would feel if I was suddenly transported to a strange place, away from my family, with no means of getting back home. It's quite scary.

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt. The place Wendy is trapped in—The Land—is a rather simple agrarian society, with limited technology. I included a few quirks about the natives, including their utensils: sporks with spoons on one side and forks on the other. Since sporks are usually one-sided spoon-fork combinations, I checked to make sure two-sided sporks exist and found that they do.
I also changed "pink paper towel" to "pink towel" because people of The Land would more likely use cloth towels than manufacture paper towels. (I'm attaching a photo of a rough draft of this page.)
