****James Reasoner’s short story “Night Round” is #143 in the never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt. All INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION links are at the end of this piece.
Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? I’ll have to go with the most recent thing I’ve written under my name, the short story “Night Rounds”, which appeared in the anthology AT HOME IN THE DARK, edited by Lawrence Block (http://
lawrence
block.com/) and published by Subterranean Press (https://
subterranean
press.com/). I do a lot of ghostwriting, so most of the names I use, I’m not at liberty to reveal.

How many pages long? That’s 18 pages, the way I format manuscripts. I use more white space than some writers. Easier on my eyes.
What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? It was written in one day, July 3, 2018. I probably did some minor editing on it later, but I don’t recall the details.
Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work? And please describe in detail. And can you please include a photo? This was written in my office/library in the room above our garage, with thousands of old paperbacks and pulp magazines around me, and one window to my right looking out over the front part of our property. I don’t have any photos of the room. But it’s full of books with a computer desk tucked away in a corner.
What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? No music, desktop computer, keyboard, and monitor, I was drinking something, probably ice water with a little lemon juice in it. It would have been written between 10 o’clock in the morning (approximately) and 5 o’clock in the afternoon, with a break in there for lunch.
What is the summary of this specific fiction work? This story deals with a lawman in a small Western town who has his peaceful existence disrupted by what he considers a shameful secret from his past. (Left: Subterranean Press Logo)
What was the most emotional scene for you to write from “Night Rounds”? The most emotional scene for me in this story is when an old enemy confronts the protagonist, who is the marshal of a small Western town, and threatens to take away everything he cares about. He realizes the mistakes he's made in the past can't be undone, that they'll always be lurking there ready to cause him trouble again and savage him with guilt. (Right: James Reasoner writing in his office in 1982)
Why is this scene so emotional for you as a writer to write? And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific scene? Like everyone else, I've made my own mistakes in life and wish that I could undo some of them. The search for redemption is something that crops up fairly often in my work (I even named a Western series REDEMPTION, KANSAS) and most of the time I like to write stories that offer at least a glimpse of hope. I guess I was feeling rather bleak when I wrote "Night Rounds", because it's considerably darker. (Of course, the theme of the anthology called for dark stories, so I'm sure that had an effect on what I wrote, too.)
Other works you have published? I’ve written nearly 400 novels and more than 100 shorter pieces of fiction under at least 41 names since 1976. I’ve been a busy boy. My best known works under my own name are the crime novels TEXAS WIND, DUST DEVILS, and TRACTOR GIRL; Western series such as REDEMPTION, KANSAS; and historical fiction including THE CIVIL WAR BATTLES SERIES and THE LAST GOOD WAR (a World War II series).
A professional writer for the past 44 years, James Reasoner has published almost 400 novels and several hundred short stories in a wide variety of genres, under his own name and numerous pseudonyms. His work has been praised by PUBLISHERS WEEKLY and BOOKLIST and has appeared on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. He lives in a small town in Texas with his wife, novelist Livia J. Washburn.
