****Angele Ellis’s short story "FORGET ME NOT" is #204 in the
never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt.  All INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION links are at the end of this piece

Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? "Forget-Me-Not." In early versions, I also called this ghostly short story "Angel." (Left:  Angele Ellis in 2014)

What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I began writing this short story in January 2014, and I finished it--if any story can be considered finished--in September 2019, when it was accepted for publication by Who Knocks? Magazine. (This Halloween edition of the magazine, #3, can be purchased at

https://www.amazon.com/Who-Knocks-Issue-Krystal-Lawrence/dp/1948046954/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1572972216&sr=1-1

This short story changed greatly over the course of close to six years. I added and then discarded a sympathetic backstory for the character Luke, whose POV dominates the story. I changed a major plot twist, spurred by a positive and detailed rejection--yes, there are positive rejections! ("Forget-Me-Not" was rejected twenty-four times before publication.) I rewrote the ending often--creating and discarding peripheral characters, and both changing and finally eliminating information about the odd antique dealer(s), Luke, and Luke's girlfriend Michaela that would carry the narrative arc of the story beyond Luke's POV.

Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work? And please describe in detail. And can you please include a photo? I write almost exclusively inside and at home, except when I'm doing a free write or other exercise in a workshop--and except in workshops, I compose on a laptop. I'm a roaming writer--there are several spots in my row house where I like to write, depending on time of day, the weather, my mood. "Below Left is a photo of a comfy bedroom corner with a now-battered armchair (that's why it has a throw on it) where I write a lot."

What were your writing habits while writing this work--did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I need hot tea to get me going, although I've had to switch to decaf Earl Grey (Below Right) because of digestive problems. The Earl--as a poet friend with a similar habit calls him--often is by my side. Although I love music, I only listen to it before/after/while taking a break from writing. (I've always been like this--I need quiet to work.)

As I said, I compose almost exclusively on a laptop. I used to be a night owl, staying up until morning to finish something. Now--although I will use a bout of insomnia creatively--I'm a morning-afternoon-early evening writer. I often have several projects going at once, both short and long-term. Some are editing jobs, and others are commissioned pieces, such as book and film reviews, which have deadlines. Deadlines are a great motivator--although unless I'm seriously ill, I write something every day, even a few brief extemporaneous poems (which I write for friends on birthdays and special occasions, and often post on Facebook).

Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference. This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer
. I'm going to break the rules on this question, for a few reasons. First, this entire story was an emotional experience for me to write (for reasons I'll explain in answering question #6). Second, I have trouble with both beginnings and endings when writing a story, and had major trouble with this one. Third, I've chosen a story that was published. So I'm including two excerpts: the beginning of the published version, and the published ending.

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write? And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? Here's the backstory on this story: I wrote "Forget-Me-Not," in part, to deal with my breakup with a boyfriend with whom I was involved for six years. (Compulsion is another motivator for my writing.) But this is not an autobiographical story, except for a few traces. Luke is not my boyfriend--although he may be a generic bad boy--and I see little of myself in either of his girlfriends, Gabrielle and Michaela. The plot of this vengeful ghost story also is invented. The eerie photograph at the story's center slightly resembles a photograph I bought at a gallery show years before I met my boyfriend, although I did end up giving it him. (I know he still has the photograph, because I saw it on his wall in a recent video that he posted on Twitter.) Also, he used to call me "angel"--as the characters in the Luke-Gabrielle-Michaela triangle do in this story--both as an endearment and as a play on my first name, Angele. (Above Right:  The ending of "Forget Me Not")

Yet despite being an invented ghost story and not an autobiographical story, "Forget-Me-Not" was very painful to write. I think this is why I prefer the mask of fiction or poetry in my writing, although I have published some pieces of creative nonfiction. I usually need the freedom to change characters and narratives as well as to blur the details more than nonfiction allows, while still conveying emotional truths.

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt. As I not only compose but for the most part, revise on a laptop (even when I've printed out a version of a piece), instead of marked-up rough drafts, I've included the beginning and ending of an early draft of this story from April 2014, so that readers can note the changes.  (Left:  Angele Ellis in 2014)

I bent the excerpt rule both because of my method of composing--I write and edit almost exclusively on a laptop and don't keep marked-up drafts, although I do keep old rejected drafts--and because this story was published (after nearly six years and twenty-four rejections).

****Allan Hudson’s "The Alexanders Volume 1  1911-1920" is #203 in the never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt.  All INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION links are at the end of this piece

Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? The title of my novel is The Alexanders Vol.1 1911 – 1920. The original title I was considering was The Alexanders – Dominic 1911 – 1920.

Because this is planned to be a series, I felt that adding the name of my main character would be too limiting as there will be other Alexanders involved. Vol. 2 will be mainly about Dominic again but in a different time frame (1921 – 1930) and the same title wouldn’t be as effective.

I also thought of just using The Alexanders.

What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I started writing this story in the fall of 2018 and the development is still ongoing as I am waiting for the proof copy of my novel to arrive by courier. I was advised on the 9th of August the proof was shipped and I am anxiously awaiting the first copy. It is presently uploaded to amazon and other outlets but I am holding off the announcement until I have completed the final inspection.

Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work?  And please describe in detail.  And can you please include a photo? I wrote most of the story in my garage which I converted to a writing area and lounge. (Below Right) I have a spot dedicate dot my writing with a large table in front of a window facing Cocagne Bay where I can watch the sunrise and the moody waters off the shore. In the coldest days of winter, I write in a nook I have off the living room. (Left:  Allan Hudson in 2018)

What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I prefer to write in the early mornings. I need complete silence and no disturbances. In my lounge I have a coffee perc set up, a small fridge for refreshments. I have a clipboard with my notes for each story I am working on so that I can refer back to timelines and character traits, as well as my research. I use a laptop and back up to a flash drive.

Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference.  This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer. Pages 242 – 243.

In early July, the Battle of the Somme begins. The French Sixth Army assaults the German Second Army at Foucaucourt-en-Santerre along the River Somme. The war claims thousands of lives, technology providing new ways to kill: rapid fire machine guns, poison gas and submarines. Scientists and engineers have been given the task to create a vehicle that can overcome the stalemate in the war, a way to advance over the trenches of men and their munitions. As a result, the British, French and Germany develop tanks – armored land ships.

In the victory of the Canadian Corps and its allies in the Battle of Hill 62, Corporal Raymond Desjardins dies leading his men forward into a blaze of German fire. When the war ends, he will be hailed a hero, but two months after his death he is being mourned by his family in Notre Dame. No body to honor, only a letter announcing his death and the honors to be bestowed, hand delivered. The bearer, a middle-aged man in uniform and a shared sorrow upon his face, apologizes for the late notification, blaming the extremes of the vile war. The memorial service is being held today, the second Sunday in September.

Somber clouds grace the skyline behind the church, the late morning sun not yet risen above them. Still it frosts the upper edges with a yellow tinge, softening the sad greyness below. Mourners comment on the possibility of sunshine, offering the family a little hope. The air has a tint of burning coal from the train that rolled through only moments ago, its load mainly freight. Maria crinkles her nose at it when she disembarks from her carriage, Dominic at her side. Her father pulls the buggy away from the church; being early, the parking area only has one other buggy, probably Father Hébert's.

The church was built in 1909, a simple enclosure with the basic raised nave and apse, tall paneled windows, wide front doors and hard wooden pews on each side. Candles flicker around the altar, with wisps of blackish smoke escaping from the frosted white vials containing them. In the middle of the aisle at the front, near the railing where people kneel to receive communion, is a small table covered by a crisp, linen cloth that drapes on all sides to the floor. On it sits a wreath, propped up by a wooden easel. A photo of Corporal Desjardins, issued by the Canadian Corps, is in a golden metal frame that stands beside the circle of flowers.

The church is full, men standing in the back. The Desjardins family is held in high regard and most of the village is there to pay their respects. Dominic escorts Maria to the front left pew to join her father and her brother, Private André Desjardins, who is home on bereavement leave from the Valcartier military base in Quebec. The oldest brother, Robert, remains in England. Aunts and uncles and many cousins occupy the four pews behind them.

At the end of the mass, Father Hébert invites the family to the table. Dominic remains seated while Maria, André and their father huddle around the frame, their arms about each other. The silence is so absolute you can hear the several tears from the old man splatter close to the frame. No one moves to wipe it away. Maria's stoic mien disguises both her anger and sorrow at the madness of the war, the end of her brother's life. André stares at the photo, afraid to blink, a stiffness in his chin. It could be him.

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write?  And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? This excerpt is taken from the 1916 section, Chapter 5.  My main character’s fiancé and her family have been told of her brother’s death in the war. It was emotional for me

Because I was trying to imagine having a funeral for a loved one with no body, no proof of his death other than a letter from the War department. How would this feel? How would you mourn for a son that you only have memories of? Where is his body? How did he die? What were his last thoughts?  So many questions unanswered.

For myself, I remember listening to my father (Above Right) when he spoke of his experience during WW II and how emotional he was speaking of friends he lost and some where the body was blown to bits, nothing left to send home. I imagined the grief the person’s family must’ve experienced.

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt. There were a few re-writes regarding the church because I had to research the new church that was built shortly before the event took place in my novel. The original church in the community of Notre Dame burnt down prior to this event and I had the old church in the description.

Also, how could I bring the loss and sorrow to the reader that the family were experiencing, especially the father. I re-wrote this paragraph several times.

Allen Hudson Biography:  “I live on the east coast of Canada with a wonderful lady named Gloria. Surrounded by a loving family, I am a very happy man. I am retired from a successful career as a business owner and sales representative. I now fill my time with writing and working on other art projects at home. (Right: Allan Hudson in August 2020)

I have two action/adventure novels in the Drake Alexander Adventure series - Dark Side of a Promise & Wall of War. I have published a collection of short stories – A Box of Memories. My fourth book is the first of a new series beginning with Det. Jo Naylor, titled Shattered Figurine. My newest work is a historical fiction due for publication in mid-September. It is the story of the Alexander family, originating in Govan, Scotland in 1911, beginning with Dominic Alexander. I have a completed manuscript for the second Jo Naylor novel, titled Shattered Lives, due for publication in 2021.

My short story – “The Ship Breakers” received Honourable Mention in the NB Writer’s Federation short story contest. In 2020, my short story, In the Abyss, also received Honourable Mention.”
