Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us?

The Girls of Pearl Harbor. Often, my working title isn’t what my publishing team decide to use, but in this case it was!

What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction?

I honestly don’t remember when exactly I started it, as my books are published between 6-12 months after I finish writing them so it was a little while ago. Usually they take me around 4 months to write, plus an extra month of solid research.

Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work?  And please describe in detail.  And can you please include a photo?

I write full time at home, so always in the same place. I move between my office/kitchen table/sofa/bed to be honest, depending on what stage of the novel I’m at. Early on I like to have my research and Pinterest board on my big desktop screen at my desk, while I write on my laptop, and then later when I’m full immersed in the story I often move around the house to sit in the sun.

What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day?

I always write on my laptop, then move to my desktop computer for editing once the book is finished. I also do all my edits/revisions from my editor on my desktop. I always need to eat chocolate by mid-afternoon to keep going when I’m writing, and I always sip black tea or a latte if I’ve had time to go to a coffee shop! And water, I drink a lot of water when I’m writing too. Sometimes I have a playlist going of songs I like, but more often it’s either silence or I play thunderstorm/rain tracks via an app on my phone as white noise.

Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference.  This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer.

Oh, this is an easy one! Actually there are two, but I don’t want to give away the other one as it happens later in the book. The hardest one to write emotionally was the one scene that I had fully formed in my head before I started writing. I use part of it as a ‘flash forward’ type prologue at the start of the book, but the reader gets the fully developed scene in a later chapter.

‘No!’ Grace’s scream cut through the air, echoing sharply against the drone of aircraft overhead.

‘Grace, stop!’ April called, her hand slipping from Grace’s wrist.

‘Grace!’

The planes were deafening, the roar so low and loud that when Grace looked up, she could see the pilot’s face, could see his smile before he unleashed a torrent of bullets raining down around them. They were under attack!

‘Grace!’ April called again.

But Grace ignored her, her eyes locked on Poppy, so close but so far away, bending down toward a cowering puppy. ‘Run!’ she screamed to her friend. ‘Poppy, run!’

Poppy stood still, her eyes filled with horror as she looked up at Grace, her mouth open as if she were about to call back.

Grace started to sprint, desperate to get to Poppy, to do something, anything, to save her. What was happening? Who was shooting at them? Why wouldn’t Poppy move?

Seconds felt like days as Poppy finally started to run, but then strong arms circled Grace from behind as her scream caught in her throat, holding her back, forcing her to stop.

‘Let me go!’ Grace yelled, gasping as people started to fall across the field, as the relentless drone continued, ammunition raining from the sky like a ferocious storm lashing the land. ‘We need to get to her!’

‘No.’ The word was whispered, but it was still a command. Teddy had hold of her, Teddy was dragging her back, and no matter how much she clawed at him or struggled, he wasn’t letting her go.

Grace could only watch in horror, screaming out to Poppy as one thought echoed over and over through her mind. Please let Poppy 
live.

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write?  And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt?

I felt very teary/emotional writing it, because it was an accurate historical depiction, which made it very confrontational. I find that with a lot of my historical fiction.

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt.

I unfortunately don’t have a marked up rough draft, as I work on Word and just keep changing the draft as my edits come through from my editor in track and change.

I have four other historical women’s fiction novels – The Spitfire Girls, Hearts of Resistance, Wives of War and Voyage of the Heart, as well as a long backlist of romance/contemporary women’s fiction novels!
