Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? My working title was The Girl Made of Silence. I still really like that title, but I was told it was too literary. My agent came up with The Prisoner’s Wife.
What are the dates you began writing this piece of fiction and when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I was first told the story in 2007, and wrote it initially as a long narrative poem, which was published online in 2008. But the story was gnawing at me – begging for a wider audience, and so I finally decided I’d try to write it as a novel. This required a LOT of extra research, which I began in 2015, culminating in a trip to Eastern Europe in early 2016, before I settled down to write. This novel went through 17 drafts in all, so it really wasn’t finished until the book went to press in 2020.
Then my UK editor had me do some substantial rewrites, adding chapters from the PoV of the male protagonist. So it’s been quite a journey. Translation rights have now been sold for Dutch, Hungarian, Czech, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, and Spanish editions.
Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work? And please describe in detail. And can you please include a photo? We live in a three-bedroom house in London, England, and my writing desk is in the small bedroom, which has now become my study. Picture included.
What is the summary of The Prisoner’s Wife? Inspired by the true story of a daring deception, a young Czech woman is plunged into the horrors of a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp to be with the English soldier she loves.
1944: In the dead of night a young Czech woman and a British soldier creep through the war-torn countryside
Izabela and prisoner-of-war Bill have secretly married, and are on the run, with Izzy dressed as a man and her hair cut short. The young husband and wife evade capture for as long as possible, until they are cornered by Nazi soldiers with tracker dogs.
Izzy’s disguise works. The couple are assumed to be two escaped British soldiers and transported to a PoW camp. However, their true test has just begun as they face terrible living conditions and the constant terror of Izzy’s exposure. But in the midst of unimaginable horrors comes hope, for the young couple are befriended by a small group of fellow prisoners.
These men become their new family, willing to jeopardize their lives to save Izzy from being discovered and shot.

The Prisoner's Wife tells of an incredible risk, and how our deepest bonds are tested in desperate times. Bill and Izzy's is a story of love and survival, against the darkest odds.

One bright afternoon in late March, I’m sitting in my usual spot, deep in a book about a village called Middlemarch, when a sound makes me lift my head. It’s a whistle, someone whistling. A long way off. I lay my book down, not even noting the page number, and tell myself, ‘Lots of men whistle…’ but the tune begins afresh, moving away from me, and I recognise the song about the nightingale in the square which Bill always played for me. My heart leaps, and I jump to my feet, weaving between the huts and around the groups of men, to follow the sound. It stops and I panic. Maybe it’s him, but we’ll forever miss each other in this great maze of humanity. Then it starts again, and the words come back to me ‘Angels dining at the Ritz.’ It’s closer now and I begin to run, rounding the edge of the cookhouse, and running slap-bang into the whistler.
“Oy!” he yells, and pushes me away. I stumble back, half losing my footing, and catch a momentary glimpse of a dark-haired, lanky stranger.
“Watch it!” he snarls, and I back away, muttering, “Sorry, sorry.”
I round the edge of the nearest hut, with his voice following me, “You wanna mind where you’re going!”
I crouch down against the wall, curling into myself, into a tight ball of pain. It’s not Bill. It will never be Bill. All my life I’ll hear snatches of song, or catch sight of a blond head in a crowd, and think it’s him. And it never will be. I pull my knees into my chest, hugging the pain, holding my breath, willing myself out of a world which no longer has Bill in it.
Footsteps stop close to me and someone says, “All right mate?”
I lift my head and grimace.
A man with sergeant’s stripes nods encouragingly. “Nearly over now.”
I nod, and he moves away. But it’s not over for me. It will never be over for me.
Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write? This is the emotional low-point of a true story which is often harrowing to experience and was often difficult to write, though it is always mitigated by the courage and love of the friends who support Izzy and Bill.
And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? I had to be completely in Izzy’s head to be writing this, and bringing to that all my own experience of longing and grief. If I hadn’t been feeling the rush of hope and then the deep gulf of disappointment and anguish she falls into, it wouldn’t have been believable to the reader.
Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked-up rough drafts of this excerpt. In the early drafts, Bill and Izzy don’t become separated, so this scene doesn’t exist. I think from when I first wrote it, it remained pretty much as it now appears because it felt emotionally true.
Biography of Maggie Brookes: “Serendipity is an important part of a writer’s life, and it was luck that gave me the best story of my life – the one which became The Prisoner’s Wife. It’s an extraordinary true story of love and courage, which was told to me in a lift by an ex-WW2 prisoner of war. He said, “I bet I could tell you a story about the war which would make your hair stand on end,” and I was hooked.
I was born in London and have been writing stories and poems since I was six. After an English degree at Cardiff University I became a newspaper reporter, moving to BBC TV as an historical documentary writer / producer / director. I have published five poetry collections in the UK under my married name of Maggie Butt. My poetry website is: www.maggiebutt.co.uk I have come across some great stories, and told them in a variety of forms, but none was as good as Izzy’s.
I have been married since 1982, and when our daughters were born I left the BBC and began teaching creative writing at Middlesex University, where I stayed for 30 years. It was a huge delight and privilege to foster the writing of others. In addition to writing and teaching, I have also been a fellow of the Royal Literary Fund and Chair of the UK’s National Association of Writers in Education from 2007 to 2012.
In normal times, my husband and I divide our time between north London and Whitstable. In London I go to poetry events, art exhibitions and ballet; I meet my writing group, and see our two lovely grown-up daughters. In Whitstable I enjoy swimming in the sea (weather permitting!), beach-side walks and singing with the Oyster Singers community choir. We look forward to being able to do all that again one day, and take none of it for granted. We have wonderful friends in both places. Anywhere and everywhere I’m either reading or writing. In 2017 I organised an 8 hour poetry marathon which raised over £14,000 for a refugee charity, and this year I have organised two fundraising events for Poets for the Planet.
Travel has always been a particular pleasure - and one day I hope it will be again. As part of my research for The Prisoner’s Wife, my husband came with me to the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany and drove the route of the Long March while I took endless photographs and scribbled notes. I am delighted that publishers in the UK, US, Netherlands, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland Portugal and Mexico are as eager to share Izzy’s story as I am.”
