****Janice Spina’s HUNTING MARIAH is #199 in the never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt.  All INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION links are at the end of this piece. (Right: Janice in July of 2020)

Name of fiction work. And were there any other names you
considered before that you want to share with us?
Hunting Mariah is the title of my mystery/thriller/suspense/crime novel for 18+. I had considered just using Mariah but it didn’t say enough about the book.

What was the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I began writing it in 2000 and left it alone for many years. Once I retired in 2010 I began working on other books for children and put Mariah on the back burner. It wasn’t time for me to complete it yet. I picked it up again in 2014 and completed it in 2014.

Where did you do most of your writing for this work? And, please describe in detail. And can you please include a photo? I have an office in my home (a second bedroom converted to an office) where I do all my writing. When I began this MS back in 2000 (Right) I was still working. I pumped out some chapters during my lunch break at work. I would eat at my desk instead of going to the lunchroom. Shh, don’t tell anyone! In 2014 I worked strictly in my office and completed it there.

What were your writing habits while writing this work? Did you drink something as you wrote; listen to music; write in pen and paper; directly on laptop; specific time of day? I sometimes drink green or spiced hot tea without any music playing. Sometimes my husband has the TV going if he is at his desk at the same time. I can write with or without distractions but I prefer to write in silence if and when I can. The time of day is usually after lunch time until dinner time (1-5 pm). My husband cooks many nights if I can’t get away from my laptop. Thank goodness for him! I should mention that he does all my covers and illustrates my children’s and MG/PT/YA books. (Left:  Janice in her home office)

Please include just one excerpt and include page number as reference. This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer.

Pages 6-9 (This is the Prologue.)

This could be the beginning, a way to satisfy his urges.

His senses were tingling with the sight, smell, and feel of blood. The silky texture of it and its coppery smell and even the intoxicating taste of it. Just the smell alone could cause desire to rush through his body causing a compelling urge to kill. He felt a thrill at the prospect of taking a life.

He surveyed the room of the funeral parlor where he worked assuring that all was in order before shutting off the lights and pulling the heavy oak door closed behind him. He would follow the road until he came to the alley north of the funeral parlor. In this secluded place he would lie in wait for a suitable candidate.

He had taken a job at a funeral parlor so he would be close to the inert bodies and the smell of blood. At first working with the bodies sated his needs but soon it was not enough.

As he peered through the darkness from his place of hiding he felt restless. Waiting was not his strong suit so he decided to start walking. As he walked along he pictured himself using one of the razor sharp knives from the funeral parlor on a live victim as he slowly pushed the knife’s edge into the soft pliable skin. He imagined the skin opening, blood slowly beading to the surface as gravity coursed it into a rivulet as he could see the body’s essence fade away. He shivered with anticipation.

The night had dropped its inky blackness and the rain had slicked the road with a shiny mirror image. He was acutely aware of his surroundings and listened closely as he picked up the sound of clicking heels. He had worn rubber soled shoes chosen for their stealthiness which would enable him to get closer to his victim. He increased his pace until he saw a shadowy figure walking briskly as she appeared out of the street ahead carrying a large pocketbook draped over her right shoulder. He followed until he was within ten feet of her at which time he slowed his pace. He noticed her fair hair and sighed since he favored blondes; and as he breathed in her flowery scented perfume he admired her slender build and toned calves. She seemed to be in her early twenties - perfect. He followed her more casually so as not to alarm her.

Suddenly he feigned a stumble and cried out as he fell to the curb. The figure turned and looked back at him and called out. “Are you all right?

He mumbled a reply and just lay as still as he could as he waited for her next move. She approached him, leaning closer she asked him again, “Are you okay?”

As she was bending over him he made his move. He grabbed her firmly behind the neck and pulled her down to him.  In one smooth movement he covered her mouth with a cloth soaked in chloroform holding it in place until she stopped moving. He slapped her cheek, no response. She was out cold. Looking around him he checked to see if he was alone.  Being in good shape from weight lifting and karate he had no problem lifting her into his arms. Anyone walking by would have thought that he was just being a considerate man helping his wife or girlfriend home after a little too much to drink. He planned to bring her back to the funeral parlor.

When he arrived at the door he fumbled for his key and after shifting her body to his shoulder he opened the door and kicked it closed behind him. He flipped on the lights and headed toward the embalming table. After carefully laying her on the table he stretched out his muscles and smiled at the absence of any aches or pains. He knew he was in excellent shape.

He looked at his victim more closely as he slipped on his surgical gloves. He switched on the overhead light and pulled the instrument laden trolley closer for inspection. Earlier in the day he had cleaned these instruments thoroughly until they gleamed. They now sparkled and caught the overhead light. He was meticulous in his methods and knew his craft well. He had a good teacher, his father and mentor, who always said, “Sage you are capable of great things. Think before you start, then do your best.”

He noticed that the woman was very pretty and he found he could not ignore the stirrings that her beauty elicited in his loins. He had planned to first rape her to satisfy one need then move on to the carving to satisfy the other more primal needs. He would leave his signature on her as he would continue to do with many others that would come after her. This was his first kill. He would hone his skills in due time.

The victim stirred as he first pulled off her high heeled shoes, black skirt, and then her pink silk blouse as he shifted her from side to side to remove her arms. He stopped to admire her in her pink bra and panties before removing them too. She did not wear stockings he noticed as he ran his hands up and down her smooth flawless and shapely legs.

As he secured her wrists and ankles to the rails of the table she stirred. She opened her startled eyes as she struggled and tried to scream but he had anticipated this. He stuffed her mouth with a rag muffling back a scream which would surely have alerted someone outside.

Now he climbed onto the table and lay on top of her looking into her terrified eyes.  All she could do was shake her head and whimper as the tears tracked and smeared her makeup.  He could feel his erection pushing against his pants as his excitement increased.

“Hello pretty lady. Don’t be afraid I will not kill you unless you resist me. It will be over before you know it.”

He unzipped his pants and slipped into her and he moved in a frenzied rhythm as he watched her horrified face. Once he was satisfied he jumped off the table, zipped up his pants and turned toward the trolley laden with the shimmering metal instruments.

He felt like a sculptor getting ready to create a masterpiece.

Since this was his first kill he had to set a pattern for those to come. He added some chloroform to a cloth and pressed it to his victim’s face once again until she lay still.  In order for him to do all the sculpting she had to be inert. It had to be perfect. If he did make any mistakes he would be sure to learn from them. He knew he would have to hone his skills as his father had told him.  “Think before you start, then do.” He did just that as he pressed the sharpest knife against her soft skin watching as the knife sliced through like a hot knife through butter. He would save his signature for last, like the true artist he was.

A woman’s body was found a few days later in an alley not far from the funeral parlor. Her face was almost beyond recognition and there was a shallow carving on her chest, four perfectly executed letters, S A G E.

Just a quick note – Hunting Mariah and its sequel, Mariah’s Revenge, were both finalists in Authorsdb First Lines Contest. After reading this excerpt you can see how gripping the first three lines are.

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write? And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? Writing about a rape is not a pleasant thing to do or think about. I dreamt of this and it frightened me at that time because my daughter was going to college. The college she was attending had a rape on campus and there were patrols of campus police and warnings placed for the women who went to class at night. They were warned not to walk alone. I think hearing about this news made me want to write down what I dreamt and get it out of my mind once and for all. When I dream, these dreams stay with me and the only way to get rid of the memory of them is to write them down and then they leave me alone.

It was quite difficult to write and even more difficult to read back. I had asked a fellow author to read it over for his opinions. He was most helpful in his feedback. I think I may have shocked him a little because I mostly wrote at that time for children. It shocked me too! (Janice with her husband John at a book signing in Sundown, New Hampshire in 2018)

I still hear from readers who know me as an author of children’s and MG/PT/YA books that they are shocked by the violence of this novel. Some of these readers wanted a sequel which I completed in 2018, Mariah’s Revenge. It was difficult once again to revisit Mariah and the killer in order to recreate this sequel. Now I am thinking about creating more books with Mariah as the protagonist in her own detective series. Nothing is on paper as yet but it still stewing in my brain. I need to complete a current WIP first before I delve into Mariah again.

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt?
I couldn’t find any of my original notes only ones for my sequel but here are some questions I wrote for Book Clubs. I have a tendency to type everything up and destroy the messy notes. Sorry about that. I am forced to do this because of storage space in my little office.

Anything you would like to add? Thank you so much, Christal, for
inviting me to be interviewed on your blog. I appreciate the invitation and enjoyed answering your questions. All the best to you and your readers.

Janice’s stories have been featured in others’ anthologies and one of
her short stories has been published in The Writers Newsletter. She plans to write more children’s books, middle-grade, young adult fantasy, and novels over the next several years. As the author says, “There is always another story running around in my head just waiting to be written down.”

Janice’s hobbies are crocheting, exercising (walking, hula hooping to keep in shape, Tapfit), and reading, reviewing books, blogging, traveling, going out to the movies and dinner with her husband, and spending time with her five grandchildren who are her inspiration to write. (Sadly to say, some of these activities above have been put on hold due to the Pandemic.)
