****Filmmaker Elaine Roberts-Kercheff’s screenplay Through The Silence is #190 in the never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt.  All INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION links are at the end of this piece
What is the date you began writing this screenplay and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? 12/4/2019 - 12/5/2019

Where did you do most of your writing? And please describe in detail. I actually started typing the story while doing my hair at the salon and finished when I got home. I usually sit in my living room and write on my laptop (Right)

What were your writing habits while writing this screenplay - did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? Since it was a FilmCon 24 hour challenge, I wrote non-stop, only breaking for meals. I did it all on my laptop.

What is the summary of your screenplay? A man lays on the pavement floor, face covered in sweat and dirt, as if he's been through a battle...and beaten. Around him there's a sense of chaos - nightfall, smoke, reflections of red and blue lights, but there is silence. We hear the man's thoughts as he contemplates the point of it all, and we're taken through a series of flashbacks, as if his life is flashing before him....
A five year old sits in a kitchen eating a bowl of cereal while his mother talks on the phone. He stands and walks through a door, emerging as a ten year old boy walking in  a school hallway. The boy gets beaten by bullies, but manages to escape through a door where he emerges as a fifteen year old walking on ghetto streets. He gets approached by drug dealers, but they flee when police arrive on scene and begin shooting. The boy runs through a door emerging as an 18 year old and drops in line with cadets at boot camp. The drill sargeant makes him do push-ups and when he's done, he rises and walks through a door emerging as a twenty-one year old police officer in NYC while the Twin Towers are under attack. He ushers civilians through a door and before the tower collapses, he jumps through it, emerging as a thirty-year old in Afghanistan under fire from insurgents. He drags an injured soldier through a door and as a grenade launches and explodes, he jumps through the door and emerges as a forty-year old in a police uniform attempting to stop an Active Shooter. Suddenly, he's hit by a bullet and gets knocked down. We are at the beginning of the story.
The man questions what the point of fighting for the right thing is, because it will never stop. Then, through the silence, he hears a child cry. He opens his eyes, his purpose returned, and runs to pick up the child, carrying her through the chaos of police cars, bullets flying, noise. He returns the child to her mother, and walks through a door, knowingly. He emerges into a home as himself, his two young children run to greet him, his ex-wife follows. He asks her for forgiveness, and promises to keep fighting for them... for all of them.

Please include just one excerpt.  This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer.

MAN (V.O.)
I could stay down. Sleep. Die. It would be so much easier to do so. To give up. Be done with it all. To embrace the calm, peace, tranquility. To finally rest. To not have to worry every second of every day. To not hear any more noise. It would be easier, to stay here like this. Forever. I've fought, hard, for so long. To stand up for what's right. To stand up for others. To do the right thing. It requires so much effort, even when you're tired. Even when you're sick. There are no breaks, no vacations. When will it stop? When will it be enough? When will I reach that moment, where I could just...be?

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write?  And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? *and humor is one of many emotions. This excerpt is emotional because I have felt this many times before, and have seen others feel it as well. It's the point where you question what's the point of it all. It feels as if a light has turned off, your light, inside, and with that purpose gone, there's no purpose at all.

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt. There weren't any deletions or marked up drafts. This was pretty much it since it had to be done within 24 hours. The story was written all at once. The rest of the time was getting it polished.

Has this screenplay been made into a film? And if NOT which actors would you like to portray your characters in this screenplay? It hasn't been made into a film. For some reason, I pictured Ryan Reynolds's (RIGHT) face and voice, and that's the person I envisioned throughout writing the script.

How many pages?  What does that equate to how long the film would be? It is four pages. My guess is, it might be a bit longer with the visual scenes.
