***Justine Quammie’s “Would It Be Too Much” is #213 in the never-ending series called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem.  All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece.

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? The poem I chose is called, “Would it be Too Much” from my second book of poetry.
The idea came to me as I was ruminating about what “reality” is. Sometimes people think of reality as one size fits all, however for this poem I wanted to delve into the idea of asking the Universe for a “favor”. I wondered if there could be a sort of common ground between all life, so we could have one sense of “reality”.  At the time, I questioned if this would even be possible or if it was right of me to ask for such things.
At first, I struggled with how I wanted to address the Universe. I wanted to have some mystery and so I decided to address the Universe/God/Supreme Being as “You”.
All in all, this poem is a contemplative exercise for me (or the person of Justine in 2018).
I also, worked to find ways to accurately express how I saw the things in life that divide us and so cause us to have different interpretations of reality, or what is important in reality.

Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?  And please describe the place in great detail. I was at home sitting at my laptop. I may have started writing on a piece of paper, but all revisions were done on the computer.

What month and year did you start writing this poem?
Between May and June of 2018

How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?) I worked on this over the course of a month and drafted it 4-5 times.
I typed this, so I do not have rough drafts saved. Every time I worked on it, I just saved the new version to the same document.

Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version?  And can you share them with us? I played around with how to separate my questions to the Universe, and the responses. But the responses were always on their own line for clarity and distinction.

What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem? Sometimes what we ask for or wish for comes to us without us knowing the gravity of our desires.
I want readers to consider how we think of what is real. Try to understand that even though we are in our own world (we all have lives and each life is a separate world than the larger Earth) maybe it is possible not to violate “spiritual codes” and respect the laws of the Universe and nature.

Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why?  When I discuss “Love is an endangered species”, I felt strongly about the negative things we see in the world. This wasn’t necessarily emotional as in making me cry or wanting to hit someone, but I felt like Love was dying out…and that bothered me.

Has this poem been published before?  And if so where?
Not outside of my book.  “Would it Be Too Much” from Truth Chapters:  A Collection of Creative Writing

Justine Quammie is a self-published poet who focuses on women’s issues, honoring her elders, experimenting with form, and empowering her readers to be authentic and strong.
In 2017, her first book of poetry, “Tributes & Metaphors”, was published on Amazon to pay tribute to her beloved Grandmother. One year after, she published her second book, “#truthchapters: A Collection of Creative Writing” which discussed various levels of personal truth and how to find it.
At 17 years old, Justine wrote her official first poem for a Domestic Violence Contest, and was published in her school magazine. She decided to attend Sacred Heart University, majoring in English, and concentrating on Creative Writing. Earning her MAT in Education from Sacred Heart as well, she became a High School English Teacher. Last year, she taught Expository Writing and Developmental Reading at the college level.
Now, Justine shares her knowledge, experience, and resources to serve people who want to self-publish and promote their poetry. She seeks to help others share their deepest and most authentic narratives to speak their truth confidently and fearlessly.
