Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? My debut picture book is called Mac and Cheese and the Personal Space Invader—it’s a story about a young boy, Oliver, who wants to learn how to be a friend. His teacher mentions that the class guinea pigs, Mac and Cheese, are the best of friends, so Oliver studies them. When Oliver starts treating his classmates like Mac treats Cheese, cuddling and snuggling with them, the other kids are frustrated by Oliver’s invasion of their personal space. In early stages, I called the story Personal Space Invaders. We also called the story Oliver’s Personal Space Case, but the word “case” made it sound like a mystery, so we settled on including Mac and Cheese in the title to hook readers, and I still got to use the punny “Personal Space Invader,” too.

Fiction genre? Ex science fiction, short story, fantasy novella, romance, drama, crime, plays, flash fiction, historical, comedy, movie script, screenplay, etc. And how many pages long? This book is a picture book, 32 pages long. I write primarily picture books but am also working on a couple of middle-grade novels that are around 150 pages long.

Has this been published? And it is totally fine if the answer is no. If yes, what publisher and what publication date? Mac and Cheese and the Personal Space Invader will be published on August 11, 2020 by Clear Fork/Spork Publishing.

What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? I rough-drafted this piece in 2013. At that point, I had little aliens who were literal personal space invaders and a human boy chasing after them and getting too close to people. Things weren’t working with the manuscript, so I set it aside. 

                    In 2018, I had a chance to workshop it with the woman who eventually became my editor, Callie Metler-Smith (http://www.calliemetlersmith.com/) at Clear Fork. After she read the alien version, Callie said, “What if you get rid of the little aliens and he’s just a boy who struggles with personal space?” I loved that idea and we worked through edits before she offered me a contract in late 2018.

Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work? And please describe in detail. And can you please include a photo? I work as a school librarian, so during the summer and during other breaks, I sometimes write sitting on our living room couch (Left) or at our kitchen table (Below Right) 

          During the school year, I spend a lot of time waiting for my kids to finish extracurricular activities, so I’ll write at the public library, at a picnic table, or in my car. Whenever and wherever I have a chunk of time, I’m writing!

What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? I usually have some sort of caffeine when I’m writing—hot green tea in the mornings, cold tea in the afternoons. I write in silence or listen to nature sounds or classical music. I get distracted and start singing if I put any other kind of music on. ;) 

          I used to be a pen-and-paper first person, but I’ve gotten better at using my laptop. For clarity of mind and story, the earlier in the day I can write, the better, but during the school year, my writing is done primarily in the evenings.

What scene/excerpt of the book was the most emotional for you to write? This scene/excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer. Prior to the following scene, Oliver has tried to make friends with two other classmates and has failed. In this scene, he accidentally hurts someone and his teacher has to step in.

At recess, I want to run with Dustin, but end up tripping and falling on him instead.

 “My personal space!” Dustin howls.

“It was an accident.” I rub my head against his shoulder, nuzzling him to say sorry like Mac and Cheese do.

Mrs. López says, “Oliver, I see you’re getting really close to Nina, Pedro, and Dustin.”

              “I’m doing what Mac and Cheese do,” I answer. “They’re good friends, always cuddling close together.”

Mrs. López smiles. “Mijo, people aren’t guinea pigs.”

Why is this scene/excerpt so emotional for you to write? And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific scene/excerpt? This scene breaks my heart because Oliver’s doing everything he can to be a good friend, and it gets to the point that some of his classmates don’t want to be around him. My daughter struggled with some of the same friendship issues when she was little, so this brings back some of those tear-filled days. I’ve cried while writing the scene and cried even harder when I saw illustrator Heather Bell’s depiction of the scene.

Other works you have published? In 2011, I self-published a young adult paranormal romance, Devil.May.Care. I also have a nonfiction children’s book about animals coming out in late 2020 through Lerner/Millbrook Press, BIONIC BEASTS: SAVING ANIMAL LIVES WITH ARTIFICIAL FLIPPERS, LEGS, AND BEAKS.

     Jolene Gutierrez grew up on a farm, surrounded by animals, plants, and history. She is an award-winning teacher-librarian and has been working with diverse learners at Denver Academy for the past 25 years. She holds a Master’s degree in Library Science. She’s a wife of 22 years and mama to two teenage humans, three preteen dogs, and an ever-rotating variety of other animals including a crested gecko, a hedgehog, and a rescue squirrel.
