#123 Backstory of the Poem
“To Those Who Were Our First Gods”

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? The origin of this poem sprang from the Book of Judges, or more specifically, my investigation into the violent, archetypical strong-man story there that prompted reactions in me so swift that the poem—which is a letter addressed to Samson himself—practically wrote itself. Like many, I hadn’t really stepped into the darker corners of the Old Testament since I was a little girl in Sunday school, but my wife, poet Jessica Jacobs, suggested I revisit it. She had just read it as part of her study of Torah, and knowing how much I’ve been invested in writing about animals these past three years, she rightly thought the story would compel me.


At that time, I remembered only the highlights of Samson’s story—mostly to do with his luxurious, superman-like hair and its demise—and I had somehow forgotten (or blocked?) the details, including the lion that he killed with his bare hands and all those poor foxes he used as a kind of prehistoric weaponry, binding them together in pairs with a lit torch before loosing them upon his enemy’s fields. 
Feeding into this was the fact I was volunteering at a nature center at the time, spending my afternoons with two beloved donkeys who delighted me to no end, and of course, Samson’s chief weapon was the jawbone of an ass. Now knowing the peaceful, playful nature of donkeys, the irony was too much for me, and I knew I couldn’t read those passages and be silent. 


The toxic masculinity inherent in this Bible story is, to me, a deeply ingrained and harmful part of our culture, and the poem came to me in a rush of fury and sorrow. On one hand, I wrote it in defense of the hundreds of animals tortured at the hands of this so-called righteous man and those of the many so-called righteous men after him that sacrifice countless non-human beings for our wars and our farm factories and our experiments to this day. 
Equally as important, I wrote this poem in an attempt to push back the expectations we put on boys and men that make them this way in the first place, the way that we not only give males permission to do such harm but actively mock and punish them if they show weakness, especially any sissy-boy, tree-hugging compassion for animals. Growing up in the working-class Kentucky I did, I’ve seen this suffering firsthand time and time again, and I don’t ever think I’ll stop grieving the tremendous damage done to women, children, and animals by men raised in this culture. At the same time, I have such pity for the men who were hammered into that grotesque shape and were forced to stay that way.

What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem?  What I hope this poem does is to encourage readers to question the status quo, the ways in which we accept things as “the way things are,” especially when these ways impose harm on any living being, both human and not. Martin Luther King Jr. saw the relevance between how we treat each other and how we treat animals, saying, “One day the absurdity of the almost universal human belief in the slavery of other animals will be palpable. We shall then have discovered our souls and become worthier of sharing this planet with them.” It was this wisdom of his that fed this poem and much of everything I write today, which is why I used this quote to open my next collection of poems, a chapbook called The Donkey Elegies that will be published early next year. Today, with our planet is in peril, at the mercy of climate devastation and ecological extermination, and that day in which Reverend King speaks has to be now. We have no other choice.

Nickole Brown received her MFA from the Vermont College, studied literature at Oxford University, and was the editorial assistant for the late Hunter S. Thompson. She worked at Sarabande Books for ten years.  
Her first collection, Sister, a novel-in-poems, was first published in 2007 by Red Hen Press and a new edition was reissued by Sibling Rivalry Press in 2018. 



Her second book, a biography-in-poems called Fanny Says, came out from BOA Editions in 2015 and won the Weatherford Award for Appalachian Poetry. The audio book of that collection came out in 2017. 



     Her poems have, among other places, appeared in The New York TimesThe Oxford AmericanPoetry InternationalGulf Coast, and The Best American Poetry 2017. She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kentucky Foundation for Women, and the Kentucky Arts Council. She was an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for four years until she gave up her beloved time in the classroom in hope of writing full time. 


     Currently, she is the Editor for the Marie Alexander Poetry Series and teaches periodically at a number of places, including the Sewanee School of Letters MFA Program, the Great Smokies Writing Program at UNCA, Poets House, the Poetry Center at Smith College, the Palm Beach Poetry Festival, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and the Hindman Settlement School. 
     She lives with her wife, poet Jessica Jacobs, in Asheville, North Carolina, where she volunteers at three different animal sanctuaries. She’s at work on a bestiary of sorts about these animals, but she doesn’t want it to consist of the kind of pastorals that always made her (and most of the working-class folks she knows) feel shut out of nature and the writing about it—she yearns for poems to speak in a queer, Southern-trash-talking kind of way about nature beautiful, damaged, dangerous, and in desperate need of saving. A chapbook of these poems called To Those Who Were Our First Gods recently won the 2018 Rattle Chapbook Prize, and another sequence called The Donkey Elegies will be published as a chapbook by Sibling Rivalry Press in 2020.
