Backstory of the Poem
“Earth
Cries; Heaven Smiles”

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the
moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? I began writing the poem in November, 2016. I
started with a short poem of about four lines. I would work on the poem, then
put it away, as I do most of the poems/short stories I craft.
Where were you when you started to
actually write the poem? And please describe the place in great detail. I was sitting in my backyard, near the old Mimosa
Tree. It's completely fenced in, approximately 2 acres. I was sitting at a
glass topped table, enjoying the leaves falling and birds at the feeder having
a cup of coffee in the late morning.

How many drafts of this poem did you
write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough
drafts with pen markings on it?) I had a total of 17 drafts of this poem, also some Title Changes as well.
Were there any lines in any of your
rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version? And can you share
them with us? No, basically I
started with 2 lines, then to 4 and subsequently ending with 14 total lines. In
2018, I completed the poem as a Sonnet, working on several lines to get the
syllable count right.
What do you want readers of this poem to
take from this poem? I want the readers of this piece to realize that all life is precious,
that all life is special and once life is over, the earth cries for your
departure from life, but the Heaven smiles, welcoming you home.
Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why? I think it was the line, "Grandfathers snooze;
reflect life in old chairs, our Savior kisses a warm wrinkled cheek."
Earth Cries; Heaven Smiles
White rose petals are gently falling
floating slowly down to the bare cold ground
purple lilac's open; inhale the sun
lovely essence of both waft all about.
Red ladybugs are dancing leaf to leaf
the dragonflies sit alert on a post
red robins dodging colored leaves on lawns
my old cat naps in warm sunlit windows.
Grandfathers snooze; reflect life in old chairs
our Savior kisses a cool wrinkled cheek
the children run while playing in the yard
welcome back home to the autumn equinox
whereas the earth now cries; heaven smiles
our summer now ends, but our fall
begins.
