***Susan Tepper’s “Sticky” is #218 in the never-ending series called BACKSTORY OF THE POEM where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific poem and how the poet wrote that specific poem.  All BACKSTORY OF THE POEM links are at the end of this piece.

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form?
I usually wake up in the morning with poem lines in my head.  Just one or two lines.  It’s a weird scenario, and has been going on for years.  As if the muse is determined to get me out of bed!  Sometimes, still very tired, I tell it to ‘go away’.  But then it needles me, the lines keep pulsing in my brain.  (Left: Susan Tepper.  Photo attributed to AJ Savastinuk)

Finally, I drag myself up and downstairs to my computer.
Strangely, I never have pad and pencil nearby the bed.  I should, yet I don’t.  I think it’s something about making it hard on me – this muse that hangs around.  So I go down to my little office and type up the lines and usually add more.  Sometimes the whole poem is written in a quick surge.  That’s how I know I’m merely the typist for this hungry muse who is desperate to get her words out into the world.
Other times, just a few lines are typed, and I go back up to bed.  Later on, when I look at them, they are sometimes in the wrong order: first line should be second line, and vice versa.  I find the whole poetry writing process entirely mystical.  I only studied formally with one teacher, William Packard, at NYU.  And I didn’t finish the course because my mom got sick and I had to go stay with her.  Packard was a famous guy, though he would ultimately have been the wrong teacher for me, had I stayed under different circumstances.  He was very narrative and he admired poems I didn’t like at all. (Above Left:  William Packard at the 1987 New York Book Fair)

It was my exposure to poet Simon Perchik (http://www.simonperchik.com/) that changed the way I saw poetry and came to write it.  We’ve been friends for twenty years.  I used to send him every poem I ever wrote, and he would make a few ‘gentle’ comments such as: you don’t need that word; or you could drop line
4.  That sort of thing.  So, essentially, I had the incredible experience of being both his friend and having Simon as my private tutor.  We’re still best friends and talk on the phone every day.  He’s 96 and coming out with 2 new books this year. (Above Right:  Simon Perchik -logo photo for his website)
This particular poem “Hearts” started with the first few lines, and then it grew and changed over the course of many years.  It was one of the hardest poems I've written, mainly because I wanted the sentiment of the poem to come out correctly, with its cryptic message.  I also envision a poem when I write it.  I could see all this happening clearly.

Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?
And please describe the place in great detail. In my bed!  It’s a large comfy bed with a pretty flowered comforter by Ralph Lauren (bought on sale!).  I happen to adore my bedroom which is quite Victorian in style and design.  Large armoire, dark-celadon colored wicker chair set by the window, little round stamped-tin Moroccan tables for night tables.  Flowered porcelain lamps. There are eaves facing the road.  The walls are celadon colored paper with floating branches and flowers of white, and soft rosy-coral, thinly outlined in black (Above Left).  Asian inspired. It’s a comforting space.

What month and year did you start writing this poem?
Now that is a good question.  I would estimate about 15 years ago. (Right:  Susan Tepper in 2005)  I have no idea what month, since I write a ton of poetry.                                                                                          How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?) My best guess-timate is that I went through this poem at least a dozen times.  Probably more, over the years.  I move lines around, add and subtract words.  All is done on the computer.

Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version?  And can you share them with us? Here is a section that haunted me for years, I felt it wasn’t ‘right’…  Finally I got it to this point which I think works really well with the rest of the poem:

“… destined to follow its / natural course / dragging bewildered body / behind in its wake, / or simply sitting still / as a statue in the park. / …”

What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem?
The brilliance of the heart.  Some scientists believe the soul resides in the heart.  I read the study and concur with their theory.  It totally resonated with me.  People who are well-meaning are often called ‘good hearts’.  I believe in the soul and the good heart and try to live it. (Left:  Acrylic and mixed media painting of the heart, titled Sticky. Attributed to Christal Ann Rice Cooper)

Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why?
The entire poem is emotional for me.  It is a study of mine on the heart: its failings, fears, refusal to open to others or even to itself.  As I mentioned above, the heart fascinates me and doesn’t get the credit it deserves.  It’s cheapened in greeting cards, and often over-written in poetry.
Has this poem been published before?  And if so where?
It originally came out in my chapbook 'Blue Edge' published in 2006 by Cervena Barva Press.
Then it was published in The Somerville Times, in a column called Lyrical Somerville that was founded/curated by Doug Holder (https://www.facebook.com/doug.holder1).  I asked him a few years ago if he would run it for Valentine's Day.  He did.  I was so thrilled!

Sticky

If you slice vertically
you will find a heart
dissected in tandem beats
to smear across bread
my blood and sticky love
No scope can clarify
the solitary nature
of the soul—
why this—
Memory confined to
sensible phrasings
small gestures:
coffee in a pleasant place;
the sun going down
behind a stone church;
dappled leaves, some fallen
outside plate glass window.

****Olivia Longueville's "Robin Hood’s Dawn" is #202 in the never-ending series called INSIDE THE EMOTION OF FICTION where the Chris Rice Cooper Blog (CRC) focuses on one specific excerpt from a fiction genre and how that fiction writer wrote that specific excerpt.

Name of fiction work? And were there other names you considered that you would like to share with us? My American co-author, J. C. Plummer (my friend Jennie Coleen Newbrand), and I are working on the third installment of our Robin Hood Trilogy – ‘Robin Hood’s Return.’  (Right:  Olivia Longueville)

The books in the Robin Hood Trilogy are:

1. Robin Hood’s Dawn

2. Robin Hood’s Widow

3. Robin Hood’s Return

We considered other options as book titles, but we aimed to find the right titles reflecting the main plotline of a book.  Thus, the titles convey messages about the chief idea of a book: Robin Hood’s origins, Lady Marian’s fight for his legacy, and Robin’s reunion with Marian and their joint struggle against the enemies of King Richard the Lionheart. We also kept the titles simple and short. (Left: J.C. Plummer)

The unique aspects to Robin Hood Trilogy are:

Closely follows actual history

Presents a plausible and complicated conspiracy to steal the throne from the fledgling Plantagenet dynasty

Provides insights into Robin’s family background and dynamics – both paternal and maternal sides

Describes Robin’s experiences as he accompanies King Richard on the Third Crusade

Makes Maid Marian a strong and formidable character as she leads the gang of Robin’s outlaws in book 2 and fights for his legacy against the Sheriff of Nottingham.

What is the date you began writing this piece of fiction and the date when you completely finished the piece of fiction? At present, 2 books are available on Amazon. When I met Coleen online in 2015, we realized that we both love the Robin Hood legend and would like to write a book together.  Having started working on ‘Robin Hood’s Dawn’ in 2016, we ended up creating the trilogy with an unusual plot and with new turns and twists, making the famous legend more interesting than ever before.  Book 3 ‘Robin Hood’s Return’ is scheduled for a spring 2021 release.

Where did you do most of your writing for this fiction work?  And please describe in detail.  And can you please include a photo?  As I travel often, I cannot name the exact place where I always write.  I need to have my laptop with me, for all my writings projects, including complete novels and drafts of various chapters are stored there.  Usually, I write at a desk at home or in a hotel.  At home I have a desk in my cozy study that is full of books and manuscripts in various languages.  Yet, as I mentioned, I have a kind of “moving” writing place because of my constant travelling.   When trying to find my new workspace, I always need something that suits my style: a beautiful environment, for example a room with a view on mountains and a lake, helps my creative flow profoundly. (Above Left: Olivia Longueville)

What were your writing habits while writing this work- did you drink something as you wrote, listen to music, write in pen and paper, directly on laptop; specific time of day? Some writers are clean and organized, while others are messy and unorganized.  I would say that I am a mix of the two.  One of my main writing habits is to print out necessary information from a multitude of history books stored in my laptop, and put these papers all around me so that I can do necessary historical research while describing something or creating a scene or a chapter.  Once this information is no longer needed, I always clear the space around me because its neatness helps me concentrate and prevents me from being distracted by piles of papers.  Moreover, I often find inspirational music online and listen to it while writing, but only the kinds of music that are either classical or contemplative because other types of music might distract me.  I use music and epic movie soundtracks without words, for lyrics tend to preclude me from concentrating while writing.  It is interesting that it is nearly impossible for me to edit with music, so I do it in silence.

Please include just one excerpt and include page numbers as reference.  This one excerpt can be as short or as long as you prefer.

Chapter 2 of Robin Hood’s Dawn: The Earl of Huntingdon (excerpt from second half of the first scene, pages 30-34 in the paperback edition)

22 August 1188, Sherwood Forest

[…]

Marian was laughing so hard that she was gasping for breath.  She admonished, “You cannot put a hole in that cloud with an arrow.”

“Why do you have so little faith in my abilities?” queried Robin with mock offense.  “You are not even giving me a chance.  Very well.  Pick a leaf, any leaf, and I will pierce the center in one try.”

Marian wiped a stray tear that had leaked from her eye during her unrestrained mirth.  “How do you expect me to choose one leaf?  The tree is thick with them.  It does not matter which leaf I select; you will always claim that you pierced the correct one.”

She beheld him as he stood there, bow in hand, his pale blue eyes sparkling with mischief, his boyishly handsome face sporting an impish smile, and his wheat-colored hair slightly ruffled owing to their spirited ride from the Locksley stables to their favorite meadow.  Marian liked to imagine that it was an enchanted corner of the forest—a refuge dominated by a massive oak, one of the largest trees in this part of the greenwood.

“Well?” he demanded.  “What shall I aim for next?  I need a challenge, and you will not allow me to poke holes in the clouds, for fear that it will cause them to rain–”

“That is not what I said!”

Robin persisted, “And you refuse to choose a leaf, although there appears to be an abundance of leaves from which you could make a selection.  I have already slain a brace of coneys and a pheasant.  Elvina and the cook will be quite pleased with me.”

Marian huffed in mock exasperation.  “Elvina and the cook are always pleased with you.”  A sly twinkle brightened her eyes.  “What about the pheasant you missed?”

“Missed!” he thundered.  “No, no, I did not miss that pheasant.  I never miss.  Someone deliberately distracted me.”

“It was accidental,” she insisted with a grin.

Robin argued, “Sneaking up behind me and shouting, ‘Do not miss,’ just as I released the arrow was not accidental.”

Their laughter faded as he took her hands into his.  Marian gazed deeply into his eyes, attempting to learn every shift in the emotions that he guarded so well.

She believed that he revealed more of himself to her than anyone else, but he was still often a puzzle.  At times, he was quiet and contemplative, obviously focusing his mind on some problem or issue, yet denying that he was thinking about anything important.  On some occasions, she had seen him tense with anger, only to disguise his feelings by making a jest or laughing, even though he was clearly not amused.  Marian knew that when he was truly battling his emotions, he would disappear into the embrace of Sherwood Forest, for Robin was a man who found comfort in the untamed beauty of nature.

Once, in a surprisingly candid conversation, Robin had described to her what the forest meant to him.  He spoke of how the forest made him feel alive, and how each of his senses experienced the greenwood:  the fragrances of pine and wild blossoms, the sounds of a rushing river at his feet and the rustling of leaves overhead, the taste of freshly gathered berries, the feel of a gentle rain against his face, and the vistas that could only be viewed from tree limbs high above the forest floor.  Robin had told her that the forest was both vast, as it stretched to the horizon, and intimate, as the sheltering trees sometimes seemed to be crowding around him.

Marian had frequently pondered his words, and she longed to hear him speak openly about himself again.  Unfortunately, whenever she asked him about his feelings or his thoughts, he deflected her questions with either a joke or a change of topic.

As they stared intently into each other’s eyes, Marian detected a shift in his emotions.  No longer playful, his eyes conveyed a passion that caused her to feel anxious and aching.  Cupping her face, Robin kissed her softly and hugged her close.  Marian rested her cheek upon the front of his shoulder and shut her eyes, content to be enveloped in the strength and warmth of his arms.

Unexpectedly, a foreboding settled over her.  In many ways, she had been blessed with good fortune and happiness all her life.  She didn’t remember the loss of her mother, so her greatest sorrow had been that lonely time when Robin was far away, training in Poitou.  She had missed him terribly during those seven long years.  Maybe that is why she felt a kinship with Penelope when she read the story of Odysseus.

Soon it would be Michaelmas, and they would finally wed.  Yet…she could not shake this feeling of disquiet that made her heart tremble like a baby bird fallen from its nest and lying helpless on the ground.  Such small creatures were doomed, for they had no hope against the predators lurking in the shadows, stalking the weak and the vulnerable.  Her morbid thoughts caused Marian to instinctively recoil, ending their tender moment.

“We must return to Locksley; it grows late.”  Robin’s voice was rough as he released her.

Marian nodded wordlessly and walked to her horse.  She watched as he collected the game he had slain and the arrows that he had been using for target practice.  Before long, they were grudgingly making their way back to the Locksley stables.

§§§

As they neared Locksley, they rode past the church and its desolate graveyard.  Robin stopped his horse and stared in the direction of the two stones that commemorated the lives of his parents.  Marian also halted her horse and regarded him curiously.

Once more, regret washed over Robin.  If only…He sighed deeply.  If only his father had been willing to answer his questions or had been willing to simply talk to Robin.  But Duncan Fitzooth, the proud and ruthless Earl of Huntingdon, had been an aloof and enigmatic man.  And now…he would forever remain an unsolved puzzle.

Robin turned his horse and spurred it away from the cemetery, determined to leave the past behind and focus on his future with Marian.  He knew that history was unalterable, and he believed that regrets served no purpose save to torment the mind with what could have been. But very soon he would learn that the past was not lifeless bones concealed within the embrace of the earth.  Instead, history was a predator lurking in the shadows and preparing to strike the young Earl of Huntingdon in retribution for the sins of his father.

Why is this excerpt so emotional for you as a writer to write?  And can you describe your own emotional experience of writing this specific excerpt? This excerpt is important and emotional for both my co-author, Coleen, and for me because it shows young Marian and Robin whose minds and lives are still innocent, untainted by moral dilemmas, hate, bloodshed, and bereavement.  This scene precedes the harrowing events in their lives: Marian’s grief over her murdered father, Robin’s subsequent arrest and his condemnation for a crime he did not commit, Robin’s escape to Sherwood Forest, and much later, his departure with King Richard the Lionheart  (Above Right) to the Holy Land.  These two young people do not yet know which trials and tribulations will soon beset them like a crown of thorns.  Marian and Robin live in their own blithesome world and have high hopes for their brilliant future, but a foreshadowing of some unfavorable turn of events for the characters is already building in their minds.

Were there any deletions from this excerpt that you can share with us? And can you please include a photo of your marked up rough drafts of this excerpt. We have many drafts of a chapter or a scene.  Some chapters have more than 10 drafts, and as there are 2 authors, we frequently make revisions after merging styles and discussing a chapter or an episode.  The screenshot of an early draft of this chapter in markup is given below.  Please note that even at this early point in the process, the chapter already had 322 revisions.

Anything you would like to add? Currently, my publisher and I are preparing for the re-publication of my unique alternate history series about Anne Boleyn, which is set in Tudor and Renaissance time.  The first book in the series (‘Between Two Kings’) was initially published in November 2015, having been well received by readers.  Later, the novel was unpublished at my request, and it took me 2 years to rewrite it.  Soon the new version of ‘Between Two Kings’ will be released.  I also have other writing projects, including a novel about King Charles VII of France and the Medici trilogy.

Olivia Longueville has an artistic and academic mind with a natural inclination for research and constant learning. She earned several degrees in finance & general management from London Business School (LBS) and other world-wide prestigious universities. At present, she helps her father run the family business. Olivia has always loved literature and fiction and been very passionate about genealogy, historical research, philosophy, literature, and the arts, in particular painting and sculpture during Tudor and Renaissance eras. During her first trip to France years ago, Olivia had a life-changing epiphany when she visited the magnificent Château de Fontainebleau near Paris and toured its library. This truly transformed her life as she realized her passion for books and writing, foreshadowing her future career as a writer. In early childhood, she began writing stories and poems in various languages. Then Olivia wrote some fan fiction stories, which taught her to create plausible, vivid, engaging characters and plots. Olivia and J. C. Plummer met online and, having discovered that they both love the Robin Hood legend, they decided to write the Robin Hood trilogy together.
