Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? Every month I write three poems for Inner Child Press’ The Year of The Poet book.
Our collective, about 15 poets call ourselves, The Poetry Posse. We are tasked with writing one poem on a particular theme and two poems of our choosing. In 2019, our themed poems were on a particular region of the world. So, for a year my focus was on a different region of the world each month. I have also been thinking about different countries, languages, and the word for “peace” in different languages for the last two or three years.
I saw a call for poems in response to news items and came upon this article about women arrested in Indonesia. That prompted me to looking at an Indonesian dictionary for the word for “peace” and “woman” in Indonesian.
My passion for peace and language came together with my feminism and desire for understanding people different from myself.
I am constantly looking at multilingual dictionaries, searching for the word for “peace” in my spare time. I have collected the word for peace in about 3000 different languages and written another collection of poetry entitled, Awakenings, Peace Dictionary, Language, and the Mind, A Daily Brain Health Program. I believe when we expand our definition of peace we increase our inner peace and our understanding of the people around us. The same is true when we get a glimpse into the lives of people different from ourselves.
When I saw the call for poems in response to the news and this news about the Indonesian women, I set aside my passion project on “peace” and started looking for the word for “woman” in some of the dictionaries.
Over a period of several weeks I wrote 30 or so dictionary poems, which make use of the words in the dictionary definition, example sentences, and a look at what else is on the page, before and after the chosen word.
In the Oxford English Dictionary, the word “woman” appears after “woma”, a brownish-grey Australian python and the entry after it is “womb” so as I say in my first poem in the collection, ”in English a woman finds herself nestled between a snake and procreative part of her own body.”
Because the word for woman is unique in other languages the word before and after the word for “woman” is different. The example sentences are also unique to that particular dictionary, language, and culture.
Where were you when you started to actually write the poem? And please describe the place in great detail. I feel incredibly lucky. I mostly write at home on my computer. I live in a relatively rural setting in Spokane, Washington. My home office door leads to the backyard where we have three dogs, two goats, and often a trampoline full of kids. Beyond the backyard is our large fenced garden where I can meditate and exercises as I grow fruits, vegetables, and flowers. I find I rarely have writer’s block because I can always take a quick break and go outside into a beautiful natural environment.
What month and year did you start writing this poem? I typically write fast. I wrote it over a few of days in March 2019. I have had a monthly deadline for three poems for Inner Child Press’ The Year of the Poet, every month for the last six years so I have developed a discipline for writing on deadline. I usually have an idea that I mull over for several days, sometimes even a few weeks but when I start writing, I find the words flow.
How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? (And can you share a photograph of your rough drafts with pen markings on it?) With this poem as it often happens, I write the draft of the poem on the computer and then I let it sit for a couple of days as it simmers in the back of my mind. Then I go back and rework it. I find the rough places where it doesn’t flow. I read it out loud at least three times. Sometimes, I read it backwards, one word at a time, as I think about each word. Is it the word I mean? Then I let it sit for another day or so, at least overnight, before reading aloud again and sending it off wherever it is meant to go.
In a way it is a kind of Found Poem, I just have to pick out the words for the poem.
Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version? And can you share them with us? Because I work on a computer, I don’t typically keep earlier drafts, but I usually make changes, sometimes changing a whole stanza or rearranging words or stanzas.
What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem? Women live all over the world, but no two of us have the same life experience. Our experience of life is significantly influenced by the culture we live in, how the people around us value women, and how we respond to the challenges and barriers in our life. I think when we see, really see the world through other people’s eyes we can be both grateful for all the good in our own life and think about ways to reach out and help people who are different from us whether they live half a world away or right around the corner.
Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why? When I read the dictionary line, "A woman fell from a ship into the sea" given as an example of use of the word “woman” in a sentence, I thought, what kind of life must women in Indonesia have that this is the example sentence in an Indonesian-English dictionary. Is falling from a ship into the sea, so common that everyone would immediately understand the sentence and context of the word “woman” in that sentence. I realized, of course, that Indonesia is a country made up of many islands and therefore probably lots of ocean travel. I started to think about how different my life is in landlocked Spokane, Washington. I often have the experience of hearing about some event or experience and once again, realize that it is hard to know another’s experience of life. It propels me to seek to be more compassionate.
Has this poem been published before? And if so where? It is part of a collection called, A Woman’s Place in the Dictionary, a Collection of Before and After Dictionary Poems, which I published in 2019. The book has poems related to the dictionary entry for the word, “woman” in about 30 different languages. In Indonesian "wanita" is defined as an adult female person
so is "perempuan" and "inong"
"céwék" and "ibu" mean woman
"bu" is translated dame, gentle woman, lady,
ma'am, madam, mother, as well as woman
and I wonder how women are treated in Indonesia
by the author of the dictionary including
these example sentences:
"Just bite the bullet
and have a Cobb salad with the woman"
"Nikmatilah saat yang buruk
dan juga salad Cobb dengan ibu"
I imagine shouting and wonder
what a Cobb salad and a bullet taste like in Indonesia
"A woman fell from a ship into the sea"
"Seorang perempuan jatuh ke laut dari sebuah kapal"
a story comes about why she was on the ship
and how she fell
loss of life followed by a string of words and losses
"A woman whose husband is dead is called a widow"
"Seorang wanita, yang suaminya meninggal, disebut janda"
and "The woman had just lost her only daughter"
"Satu-satunya anak perempuan wanita itu baru saja meninggal"
Then I imagine a man saying this sentence using "woman"
but she doesn't really seem to be there in Indonesian
"How dare you touch my woman!"

he is trying to possess this woman
who has lost so much and control

advocating for lesbian rights
And a mother of sons responds
