“Trading Places”

Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing
this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until
final form? My poem “Trading Places” came alive after purchasing a black rag doll. I
decided I wanted a black rag doll and was surprised I did not already have one.
I even looked in my storage for one. In my mind it couldn’t be a doll purchased
online. It had to be from a flea market or thrift store, she had to be vintage
looking/ethnic. I did my search and could not find. A few weeks had passed.
Disappointed but hopeful I knew eventually I would find one. I really wanted
the doll.
I went to an open mic reading at a bookstore called
Sister’s Uptown Cultural Book Store. Before the open mic began, I looked around
the store to fill my eyes with all the goodies that were there. And low and
behold, there she sat. Yes there she sat. She was all I had thought of her to
be. I picked her up and knew it was her I wanted.
She went home with me. I sat her on a wicker
African hat on the stairs. So gracious. So complete she was. I knew a poem
would come to me and I knew what the open line would be. One of the poets that
recited that night, opened up with a poem and the first line was, “POEM…for the
young woman I met on the train.” hence, “POEM…for the black rag doll that sits
on the stairs,”
The line for me was direct. To the point. (We poets
inspire one another and do not always know it. Artists do that. Writers.
Directors. Actors. We look at one another to inspire.) The line Crystal, for me
was an announcement. An invitation so I went with it.
Where were you when you started to actually write the
poem? And please describe the place in
great detail. I was at work when I wrote the piece. It is where I do all my writing,
front desk reception.
What month and year did you start writing this poem?
The
poem took 2 days to write. 6/26/18 and 6/27/18 On the first day I wrote down 5
lines that came to me from the top of my head. The second day the poem was
written from 1:40pm-4:48pm (I write down date and time for all my pieces.) It
was 2 drafts written.
Were there any lines in any of your rough drafts of this poem that were not in the final version? Yes there were lines written in the first draft that I did not keep in the second. One line being, “The energy factor that surrounds her comes from the ancestors.”
What do you want readers of this poem to take from
this poem? I want people to take with them that it is okay to create a fantasy world,
a respect, and admiration for a doll.
Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you
to write and why? The most emotional line of this poem for me, BIG TIME, was the last line.
I am confessing to my readers that I want to be a black rag doll that sits and
stares and smells good and is bedazzled with jewels. Doesn’t pay bills. Never
stressed or embarrassed. No pain. So how bout it, “Let me be that rag doll.”
Has this poem been published before? And if so where? The poem is not
published.
Trading places
Poem…for the black rag doll that sits on the stairs,
never
worried. Never tired. Crimson colors and dreads.
Poised and
stylish. I call her Queen Love.
Bedazzled
with jewels given her by the gods.
She exudes
magnificence and charm. She will not
Dance or cry
or speak fowl language but has a presence
of glory and
a scent of rose water.
Perfectly
quiet. Perfectly placed like once upon
a time there
was…let me be that rag doll.
She has read twice at The Ensemble
Theater in New York. She participated in the Los Vegas 20th
Anniversary and Symposium Poetry Contest for The International Library of Poetry.
She won a poetry contest at the Queens
Borough Public Library and as a result of that, through the host of the
open mic, Inga Judd, has read some of her work on WBAI Radio, Hugh Hamilton’s Talk
Back Radio Show. She has also read at The
Drama Book Shop twice for a show called Potpourri, which Melissa Maxwell
stage directed.
Maria is in several Anthology Books and was in Essence Magazine and an
online Magazine called 50BOLD. She has done open mic poetry readings in
Detroit, Washington DC and around New York City. Maria currently has a poetry
book out called Sudan’s Angels which
is available on Amazon, e-book or from the publishing company AuthorHouse and a
new poetry book just out called Burnt
Orange.
