Can you go through the step-by-step process of writing this poem from the moment the idea was first conceived in your brain until final form? The poem, "Her First Ten Days"was borne out of grief shortly after my husband died of cancer on March 26, 2016. In fact, I started lamenting his loss even before he exhaled his last breath that evening. 
          I found myself writing right after his diagnosis, during his deterioration with the disease, and for nearly a year after emptying his ashes into the ocean. For this poem, I remember feeling very much alone in our three-story house (In Port Isabel), now seeming enormous and empty.    
          So, I decided to write a dream-like, organic poem in which the widow shares her pain through everything around her: the cicada shells found earlier beneath the staircase, the trees he had so lovingly nurtured, the spiders she can't completely eradicate from every nook and cranny in the house, and of course, the element of water which he loved in every form. 
          Why ten days? In Mexico, when someone dies, the surviving spouse, children, and friends hold a novena for the dearly departed. This consists of nine days full of prayer and the lighting of candles to ensure that the person's soul is allowed into heaven. I added an extra day to complete the cycle by writing about carrying his ashes to the ocean.

Where were you when you started to actually write the poem?  And please describe the place in great detail. I remember writing it, or rather, dictating the poem into my cell phone while driving around the Rio Grande Valley. After my husband died, I had to send his death certificate to different places in order to settle his accounts. I wrote more than one hundred poems this way, as I drove because my grief was still very much fresh and still quite present, and the words would just come and keep on coming.

What month and year did you start writing this poem? I wrote this poem in the summer, possibly around May 2016. My late husband died in March 2016, and I left the country in April, so it is more than likely that once I returned to the United States, I focused on writing out everything I was feeling as a result of losing him.

How many drafts of this poem did you write before going to the final? I tend to edit as I write, so you will see a lot of pen markings over lines or entire stanzas sometimes. Unfortunately, with this poem, I don't have the original notes because I have moved around quite a bit since March 2016---eight times, in fact.

What do you want readers of this poem to take from this poem? My intention with "Her First Ten Days" is for the reader to walk alongside me as I describe this woman, myself, aching from her loss as she attempts to organically metamorphose with everything around the house she shared with the man she loved. To be moved in some way, to elicit a reaction, not necessarily pity, but perhaps a sense of wonder at the nature itself which I intertwined with metaphors throughout the poem.

Which part of the poem was the most emotional of you to write and why? The last part deals with what I actually did with his ashes, and as I wrote it, I recalled his words, "Please leave me in the ocean…", and I remembered that he said this three days before cancer took him from me.

Has this poem been published before?  And if so where? Not yet. My poem has yet to find a suitable 'home', but I will continue searching for an appropriate publication where it is read by those experiencing loss and hope that it brings them some degree of relief.


Her First Ten Days
The first day after his death, the widow crawled inside cicada shells, swallowed a fistful of thorns from a grand retama tree. She then gathered each sigh trapped beneath the floorboards, quickly flung them out the window.

The second day after his death, she dressed every chair with his favorite shirts,
filled every sock drawer with river rocks, and embroidered a black shawl with cobwebs.

The third day after his death, she asked the ocean's permission on his behalf,
burned sage to smear the ashes on every mirror. She made a quilt with pages from his poetry books
to hear the echo of his voice while she slept.

The fourth day, every ghost from his past paid her a visit: men, women, children, and beasts gathered in her living room. Standing tall, she pried open her rib cage and displayed her scars.

The fifth day, she spent hours carving his story on garden stones. She used them to form a rock cairn, an inukshuk to honor his memory.

The sixth day after his death, she collected his ashes barefoot to feel the agony of his loss. Afterwards, she mixed them with glitter to create a new galaxy in the vacuum between her thighs.

On the seventh day, she devoured a plateful of forgotten sorrows left in the cupboard over Easter. She threw the bones into the neighbor's yard and watched their dogs chew sinew.

The eighth day, she awoke to a mighty roar which she followed to the water's edge where the silence made her realize that the sound had come from her own heart.

The ninth day, she wove a crown with bougainvillaea, pink laurel, and morning glory. Then, she pierced together ebony tree pods to make a necklace.

The tenth day, she waded into the ocean with his ashes inside a gourd. The widow emptied them into the open mouth of a baby dolphin who materialized after calling her husband's name three times. It was an incantation she had learned from her mother to summon the dead.
A pelican brought her home before sunset.

Julieta Corpus has been writing since the age of eleven. She graduated from UTPA with a Bachelors Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. She’s been an elementary school teacher for the past eleven years, but has never stopped writing. She’s been published by UTPA”s Gallery Magazine, Tendiendo Puentes, a poetic anthology, Mesqite Review, STCC’s Interstice and Tierra Firme , and in the September 2009 issue of the Mcallen Monitor’s Festiva, Writers Edition. She also organizes poetry readings and is an active member and participant of the Rio Grande Valley Poetry Festival and the San Benito Writers forum. Julieta blames her penchant for the dramatic in her poetry to a life long addiction to Mexican soap operas. And she is a regular contributor to Writers of the Rio Grande
